The Saw movies are friggin great (or at least they were). There are so many films that try to mimic its style of gritty torture & genuine story telling. The absolutely appauling "Captivity" and the 2 Hostels for starters. None of which you could ever call good films. The Saw franchise is/was not only really good films, but were genuinly horrific, none of your PG-13 (12A or 15) rated nonsense here. Each has gone downhill slightly in terms of quality. I would also say in a out of 10 mark, they have all gone down one too, weird. Saw - 9/10, Saw II - 8/10, Saw III - 7/10, so will Saw IV follow this pattern................
....... Yes, put simply. This is without a doubt the worst of the Saw's. Mainly due to its lack of tension and (for some unknown reason) the general badness in terms of the way its mad. Which is odd as the 1st movie only cost $1mil to make, which is amazing. I don't know the budget for this, but i'd imagine its more. As for starters im pretty sure i witnessed some dodgy cgi blood in there.
Whats wrong then? Well like i said a lack of tension doesn't help. The traps really don't seem as gruesome as before. Maybe there running out of ideas. Although there is a 5th & 6th film already planned so, i guess ideas are not short. The main part of the film this time is alot like Saw III, with a man having to work his way around, never really being in trouble, but having to make decisions on wether or not the people he encounters should be killed or not. He has to also "rescue" 2 cops who are being held by "Jigsaw". But Jigsaw died didn't he?? Well watch and see.
All the previous Saw's have relied on its gruesome traps/games & its brilliant twists. This has a fukin great twist, well 2 kind of. One is blatantly unfair for someone. But the other (which clearly sets up for parts 5 & 6), is really good, even if afterwords you are going "hang on a minute" I had to rack my brain for a few minutes afterwoods to try and make sense of something, which does make sense in the end, but is very badly explained in the film.
Thats another problem with this, i don't know how the main charecter worked out what was going on sometimes, because i certainly couldn't. One of the traps was so badly explained i didn't realised what had happened until after it had (happened). There was also this weird new camera style were shots would cut from one scene to another very oddly, which i didn't like.
If i could also moan about the timeline for a sec. Someone said that Carrie was missing for 4 days before they found her, then they said that Mathews was missing for 6 months..... That dosen't fit into the timeline at all. Also how did they found out that Amanda was Jigsaws apprentice? In the last film Carrie found out then died, so how did the cops know in this one??
This isn't a "good" film, its full of those sort of **** ups and the torturus devices seem a little lack luster. However, it has that twist, definately on a par with the cleverness from I & II, better than III in that sense, as its twist is good, but not really clever. Also, it has 1 death, that i can't tell you wether it was horrific or not, as i (for the 1st time EVER in a film) shut my eyes. Not through "OMG this is going to be gross" but i just didnt want to see this character die, i really liked him/her (im trying not to give it away here).
Oh yes and Tobin Bell is still friggin brilliant!
6/10
PS, i copy and pasted this from my myspace, so i apologise for any dodgy spelling or swearing ( i think i got rid of it all).
Feel free for anyone to comment on what they thought on this or any Saw film
