Saw the new 9-3 today. I'm not happy, and Subaru shouldn't be, either...

Though I don't think it's necessary for me to say it whenever I see a new car, today I was absolutely outraged at the sight of the beautiful new 9-3.

It drove in front of me - 45-day tags from a local Saab dealer that expired in exactly 45 days. He was probably coming from the dealer after his exceptional purchase. This looks much better than the 3-series. There's only one problem with it ...

... it looks exactly (and I mean exactly) like the current Subaru Legacy. In all my years of being a car fan, I've never quite seen this much of a design rip-off. The car's front looks like a Legacy, it's Legacy height, it's rear is Legacy-like and its doors and wheel arches look stolen from Fuji Heavy Industries' parts bin.

As I said, the car's beautiful. If they make it in different versions, it'll definitely top the A4 in sales, and make a decent run for the 3-series, though it's a Saab so we know that won't happen.

The only way I can explain its total resemblance, though, to the Legacy is that both companies are at least partially owned by GM (though they hardly have ties to each other). If the GM link does not prove to be the defining reason the cars look so much alike, Subaru truthfully oughta sue Saab or demand (demand) a re-design, because this is a joke. The 9-3 is merely a Legacy with some extra exterior packaging. And I said some. :)

Pictures to follow.

Ya I've noticed this to. It's sad really. I mean come on be original.

Here - even from this angle they look similar, but when you see them side to side it's really absurd:

I like the saab better, just looks more polished, but now I see what you mean. Look at lexus though every single car of theres looks like a cheap imatation of Mercedes.

They had the new 9-3 at the Sydney Motor Show - I walked straight past it not realising it was the new model.

Didn't strike me that it looked like the Legacy/Liberty.

Ah well - the Legacy has one major thing in its favour - it's not a Saab!

Similar indeed.

Saab might say the same thing right back.

What I don't get is: why would Saab want to copy the legacy?

Well, from a styling point of view, I'd certainly agree - they're pretty standard Japanese mid-sized four door sedan fare.

However, having driven the previous 9-3 (plus countless Saabs) previously, and living with a Legacy/Liberty, I would have to say that unless Saab have madequantum leaps in handling and refinement (plus build quality) I'd be taking the Subaru every time - the Legacy's as close to a flawless handler as you'll get in the market segment (and the best argument for AWD in mass market cars around) and the build quality is at Lexus levels.

I will admit to a prejudice against Saabs (and anyone who's seen the front end in the old 900's would know why), but the Legacy's a car you need six months in to appreciate why the people who buy them don't tend to switch brands.

I don't think it's a matter of whether they wanted to copy Subaru or not. GM needed to revise and freshen-up Saab, so why not take an entirely "new" chassis and work from there? Up until now, Saab's have basically been just large hatchbacks. This is the first true sedan shape they've ever had. If they wanted to be considered a serious contender against the BMW 3-Series (which was the target, and as Volvo has already done), they had to move to something more familiar to that market segment: a sedan. What would be the cheapest and quickest way to get there? Copy something of similar size within the GM structure. That, of course, ended up being the Subaru Legacy. Not only did this give them a traditional (and very safe) 3-box design, but it left the option of AWD, which Saab had been wanting ever since the first Volvo V70 XC.

I think Saab did a reasonable job of hiding the Xeroxed parts, but when the two are side by side, the Legacy shows through the Saab skin. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

As for the way it handles, I hadn't heard much complaints about Saabs, other than the ridiculously torque-steery Viggen. Still, this one should be better. For the price, I don't know of a better handling platform than Subaru.

The 9-3 looks like a Seat Leon from the angle of that picture.

That was my first impression when I saw that picture about two months ago - Seat Leon.

Now that I've seen the new 9-3, I have to disagree with myself.
