Hey everyone!

I'm about to sell my PS3 and I'd like to know if the full format option erases absolutely all the data from it. Absolutely all, as in... every password, any and all email addresses, credit card info, what I downloaded with my account and so on.

There doesn't seem to be any data on it when I look at it now, but I tend to overlook things and if someone can actually confirm this, it'd be great.

Also, should I do anything else to ensure that nobody can use my stuff with it?

Thanks in advance for any and all answers!

Formatting won't delete all of your files but IIRC, "overwriting" does. Overwrite the HDD 5x or more by copying and deleting files onto it. Example...copy a huge amount of files to the fullest of the HDD then delete it all at once 5x. Use junk files, not sensitive files BTW.

Or you could put it in a PC and full format it (to the same original PS3 format) where it will write 1 and 0's to the whole drive then put it back in the PS3 and reinstall the operating system.

I can't be sure but I think the on-board full format option on the PS3 does the same thing.

I agree with the general consensus, but with one addendum. Make sure you unregister your licenses through the Sony website for your region (success will vary) while logged in with the PS3 account (changing your password in the process). If I remember correctly, games only have a 2 PS3 license, and it is best to preserve that by deactivating the PS3 that you are trying to sell (simply formatting will not work here).
