I'm planning to buy an external video capture card (over here it's called "Gaming Capture Box") because I want to record some of my PS3 gameplay and upload it to Youtube, mainly GT5 and some other games. I'm currently using an HDMI cable for my PS3, which is obviously connected to an HDTV. Problem is, the Gaming Capture Box package only comes with one set of Y/Pb/Pr cables (In the setup illustration of the Capture Box, there needs to be two sets of Y/Pb/Pr cables, one from PS3 to Box, and another from Box to HDTV).

PS3 ==(Y/Pb/Pr)==> Capture Box ==(Y/Pb/Pr)==> HDTV

Problem is, I don't have an extra Y/Pb/Pr set lying around at home. So, I was gonna go for this setup instead, from my PS3, the HDMI cable is connected to the HDTV and the Y/Pb/Pr is connected to the Box. However, the Box IS NOT connected to the HDTV:

PS3 ==(Y/Pb/Pr)==> Capture Box
==(HDMI)==> HDTV

will this setup work? Or will I definitely encounter problems and will need to purchase an extra Y/Pb/Pr cable set?

Note*: Assume all of the setups shown here have the Box properly connected to a PC via USB.

The PS3 can't output multiple video signals at once, so it won't work.

Be careful with what "capture box" you use too. Almost all will output in 1080i or 720p maximum and you'll want one that doesn't receive, record and then output the signal - this causes display lag. Something like the Hauppauge HD PVR, which splits the signal so the output bypasses the recorder, is a good bet.

What about Component? So the signal goes to both your TV and the capture card. It'll cost a bit more cos you'll have to buy some more cables and stuff, but it'll work.

oh I see.

Hmmm, in the setup that I've illustrated, the signal goes to the box first before the TV, so that will cause "display lag", as you've said. So that's not good. :(

Hmmm, my HDTV has a Component socket, but I'm not sure about the capture box. I'm gonna have to take another look at that.

Then what you should look for is a splitter so you will have a signal going to your TV and the recording device. Can't go into more detail for now but others would know how to do this.

It depends on the box. If the box you've got splits the signal internally so the output feed is "live", it's not a problem. If it doesn't you'll need a signal splitter of your own to split before the box - one feed to the TV, one to the recorder.

Setting up a video capture card turns out to be harder than I thought. :ouch::lol: but anyway, thanks for the tips. :)👍

Whoops, meant to say Splitter instead of Component, no idea why :dunce:

This sounds like a really awesome idea, atleast the end solution of having a 1080p recording 1:1 of what you're doing.

My thoughts, get it recording from the TV, if that's even possible, some sort of, HDMI out to a DVR, or run the PS3 to an AMP which has two HDMI outs. It's a pity it isn't as easy as just duplicating the source signal with like an adapter, then having one cable go to a monitor and another to a DVR or something.

My solution, which isn't cheap or really the same thing, put a camera on my steering wheel, and have that record the monitor, but there's definately quality loss versus this approach.

Once you've got it set up to component (which is Y/Pb/Pr), it sounds like it should work OK. The "Gaming Capture Box" sounds similar to the Hauppauge HDVR in that it takes the PS3 signal, passes it through to the TV, and the PC does the recording. You should be fine to play that with no lag. Just don't try and play from the PC display as that will be laggy.

My HD PVR is set up to component and it works fine, and you don't really notice that it's not full HDMI, especially once you've recorded and uploaded videos.
