So I've been exercising for over a year now and went from 205 pounds to 175.I can fit my ass into a size 33 pants if i try really hard, used to be size 38. I wasnt really watching what i was eating but now that i think about it if i was on some diet i would've lost even more weight. My goal was to hit 160 pounds but it seems almost impossible. I try to get atleast 1 hour of exercise a week. I was thinking of taking diet pills but my sister told me not to take any because she experienced some bad side effects. So my question is what should i do? Yes I know avoid sweets and fatty foods but does someone know of some secret diet? heh.

Congratulations with your progress so far. I used to get a bit fatter as well, not FAT, but if I continued living the way I did I might have been fat right now. My secret diet is no diet at all, just eat regularly and healthy. The secret to losing weight is by doing so with something that you have fun doing. Don't lose weight on a treadmill, go do something that you enjoy to do, not just to lose weight. People who lose weight on a treadmill start gaining weight again once they reached their goal because they stop exercising, since it simply isn't fun.

I started with karate a year ago, I didn't lose much weight at all, but my belt (the one to keep my pants up :D) still feels loose when I wear it at the first hole. I used to have it set in the 3rd or even in 4th hole for more comfort. I didn't need a belt back then, but now I can have 2 fists in between my pants and my body and still have space left.

Really, martial arts with a very strict and experienced sensei / sifu is a good way to lose fat and get some condition.

Of course if the idea of martial arts doesn't appeal to you, you can try another type of sports, maybe a team sport? But you never know whether you'd like it if you never tried it. I'm sure you can take a trial class for free to see if it's something for you at the local dojo (if you live near any).

By the way, build up some muscle as well. More muscles burn more fat. Do some weight training on the side of the other sports you'll pick up.

I like the idea I see, so about something extra? the martial arts idea can be done for two hours, followed by one hour of weight lifting. as far as my suggestions go, I think yoga will do you well. sometimes stress also causes weight gain so yoga can help you relax so you can do that for however long you need before the work out starts. hopefully, that can help.

Yoga would work well with martial arts, that way you get more flexible as well, which also comes in handy with martial arts. I'm about as flexible as a broomstick though, but it's getting better. I don't do yoga, though. Maybe Tai Chi might also be an option instead of Yoga, you can do Tai Chi just for the breathing techiques / learning to control your movements / getting peace of mind, but there's also a martial arts side to it. Everything you do with it is based on martial arts though, but it doesn't mean you'll be sparring all the time. By doing yoga or tai chi you also get very conscious about your own body and mind, which is important if you want to be healthy.

I didn't know that! I'll give it try!

Only sport that I'm really into is Mountain Biking but that really just works out my legs and my butt I guess. What is a good way to lose belly fat?

You don't have to be GOOD at sports to enjoy it. I'm not GOOD at karate, as a matter of fact half of the time that the sensei is yelling it is directed towards me (except for today because some higher belt dude punched him on the nose during an exercise and didn't apologize :D).

Anyway, you lose belly fat by just doing anything that burns energy. You don't have to use your stomach muscles to lose stomach fat. That's a mistake many people make. They want a 6 pack so they do a lot of sit-ups and crunches... but that doesn't burn the fat, you'll have a 6 pack hidden underneath that gut.

If you really want to lose fat training one hour every week isn't enough though. Running might be an idea, but if you're heavy that might not be the best idea because your knees suffer from it. Maybe swimming? That way you use a lot of muscles and don't put pressure on your knees... but I don't think you're too heavy to run though. You weigh less than I do. :D

sense you mention running, maybe doing a good 2 mile jog could work or a lap(s) around the block might help.

Running/Jogging that's what i've been doing and whenever I get the chance I go MTB during the weekends. I do about 1 mile a week but I think i get a way better workout when I go MTB because the uphill is killer. My heart rate just goes into hypermode.

Well heart rate doesn't burn fat. :) Actually if you use a cardio machine and enter the fat burn program it won't make you run until your lungs burst. It will let you train for a long time at a normal rate, which isn't too hard to keep up with. Of course this is also targeted at housewives and such. The best way to lose weight is to combine weight training with cardio. So get yourself some dumbells or even a bench press set (although you can do practically the same exercise with push-ups). I'd only get the dumbells if you don't already have them. Download some free e-books about fitness for the different exercises you can do with em... or buy a (good) book at a sports store or bookstore.

By the way here you can download a pdf file with some kung fu fitness tips. You ever saw a fat kung fu master? :D

How long does it take you to bike 1 mile? I was thinking, maybe 1 mile twice a week? Three times a week even? I think biking and jogging are 2 very easy - yet effective - ways of getting exercise. Biking is fun, and jogging is fun when you have music, or have a running partner. Do you have someone to exercise with? If not, I recommend you get someone to work with. You can keep each other motivated, and also it makes activities that may not seem fun much more enjoyable.

I have to say though, the title of this thread was quite misleading, hah. ;)

Biking one mile maybe takes 10 minutes. Even less than that. If you think you will lose weight or getting in shape by doing that twice a week, you will be disappointed.

You have to do about 30mins exercise before you even start burning fat.

An exercise bike or X trainer would be a good investment, the ones in the work gym have helped my dad alot.

Congratulations on your loss.

I'd be 100% against unnatural weight loss aids, but whatever flots your boat...

Today my dumbells I ordered got here. 30lbs a piece (when all weights are on it, which is more than I use, haha). Time to do some work outs at home as well. Ok, I already did have dumbells but I couldn't change the weight of those and they made my hands hurt instead of my muscles because of the crappy grip.
