Shift 1 vs Shift 2

I haven't played Shift 1 in a long while, but I think Shift 1 was a little more colorful and the track side may have been a touch more detailed.

But Shift 2 has TONS more going on, lot's more in car detail and on track detail, better lighting, shadow, and smoke effects, and the frame rate seems a little smoother.

well, I remember the framerate being terrible in shift 1. Shift 2 is a lot better there.

Damage was godawful as well. Then the whole user interface menus, smh.

Trees for instance looked much better in Shift 1. Shift 2's have an impressionistic aspect and details only become visible when you drive past them.

Shift 1 was a WAY better game both graphically and game play wise. They actually managed to make the game worse and refuse to fix it!!! Can't enjoy with bouncing and swaying worse than shift 1 and FREEZING! No matter, GT5 with its weekly update of seasonals is still keeping me busy 'til they fix this thing. I want to like this game but SMS making it difficult and PD keeps giving.

Either way S2U is a better game than Shift1 in every single aspect, but that's just my opinion.;)

Shift 1, on the PS3 at least, is only better in it's default (patched, not original) handling and it's announcer. Other than that Shift 2 is miles better

The graphics seem better to me in shift 1..does anyone agree ??

It's really down to "one is better here, while the other is better there". I have Shift 1 and Shift 2 on both the Xbox 360 and the PS-3.

Shift-2 (for both consoles) has improved graphically in several areas. The track surfaces have much more detail to them, and the track reflections have improved considerably. The cockpits are also improved. The lighting has changed significantly as well.

Where Shift-2 has gone backwards on both consoles is (track side) objects. As mentioned the trees are certainly more "impressionistic" and their appearance is very unrealistic as they suddenly "pop" once you get close to them.

The frame rates for Shift-1 on the PS-3 are absolutely horrible. Many issues there that never got patched properly.

One area Shift-1 IMO currently dominates Shift-2 is in default settings. It took several patches for it to get to that point though. Shift-2's default settings are utterly disgraceful. Ian Bell made a comment that the defaults were this way due to them trying to make all the cars work on a specific track. Regardless.., they're just plain bad.., and Shift-2 requires A LOT of tuning just to get the vehicles to handle like STANDARD road cars.

Shift-2 has also removed A LOT of the tire scrubbing. I think this is another one of the reasons that makes it so much harder to enjoy Shift-2. You need to HEAR the tires scrubbing (especially when using a game pad). Shift-1 didn't have this problem. I still honestly feel that SMS used the reduction in tire scrubbing to give the "impression" (at least by audio reference) that Shift-2's vehicles kick the rear end out less. In Shift-1 loose rear ends was a well known issue.., and the tire scrubbing was very apparent due to it.

What a lot of people seem to forget is that we're seeing an EXACT repeat of the first Shift title. Upon release MANY of the same issues that were present then are present with the latest version. Shift-1's "original" default settings were also horrible. It took several patches to smooth out the handling.

We're seeing the same thing with Shift-2. Waiting for the 3rd patch and the vehicle handling in terms of default settings and lag are STILL an issue. Not to mention the many problems with freezing/lock up that others are reporting.

I agree here. Many don't give it enough time or want a racer that is easier out-of-the-box. Pick up one of the popular computer "sims" without assists and those same racers will say WTF! For the casual racer EA/SMS may have missed the mark.

This may also fit under the default setting category (complaint). When properly turned, the tire scrubbing is much less. In my experience, on a few of my high PI cars, I have noticed during tuning/testing if I miss the mark I will hear more tire scrubbing.

I'd say the problem with the handling in Shift 2 owes more to misguided attempts to cater to pad users with unwanted hidden assists and frankly stupid default setups on some cars (bring me the head of the halfwit who thought basing car defaults around Ebisu instead of on accurate showroom settings) than it does with being too close to a sim.

Shift 1's default setups are actually much looser than Shift 2's, and are affected by two major bugs (one that prevents spring rates upgrading as they should, another that sets f/r braking effectiveness by brake power/pressure rather than the set bias), that makes them even looser in the rear than they're set up to be. Plus a handful of cars are just outright bugged with typos that disable or set certain settings assymetrically between the left and right side. It's really quite hard to work out any way in which Shift 2 would be considered inferior in this regard :)

Scrubbing - interestingly this is set exactly the same in both games:

Code:
surfacesoundconfig.xml
<prop name="Maximum_TyreLoadOverMass" data="5" />

So we can pretty much infer that any change you notice in squealing is physics related (eg tire load as a percentage of peak capacity is generally less with steeper onset).

As mentioned earlier it's a little more complicated than getting around Ebisu - it's also getting the AI around Ebisu at all upgrade levels.

Again I can't help but think that this is something people would not actually like much if they got it - probably the easiest way to see what it's like when you remove the "misguided attempts to cater to pad users" is to increase tyre pressure by 15-20 clicks and see if you actually like the result more :)
