I'm giving up on playing Shift 2 with my DFGT for now until the steering lag is patched but I decided to give the game a second chance, this time with the HKS racing controller.

It's more playable for me now, I barely feel the lag though I still have to fine tune the settings. As a result, I won my first event. :dopey: Helmet cam even works for me now as there's no disconnect with my hand movement and the hands onscreen.

If anyone else here has the HKS controller, let's compare settings.

While I can race without much problem, I am having better control and faster times with a cheapo Logitech Driving Force Wireless wheel than my HKS controller. Don't remember all of the different settings (many!) I tried with the HKS though.

I'm driving with a HKS controller. I use the Renown settings, but steering deadzone set to 3 and sensitivity set to 20.

Steering assist off and stability assist on.

Amazon has this controller for $32. Sell me in it please! My big hang up in the DS3 is steering is terrible (for me). There is no going straight for a long time without doing the slow weave left then right. Left then right. Left then right. Left then right. Le Mans is a nightmare (for me). I have Real Triggers for L2/R2. But those buttons don't really seem accurate at times.

Get it, dude. It's worth the investment, specially if you don't have a steering wheel.

Have you found any use for the macro function with either S2u or GT5? The way thus is designed, the "look around" feature is negated? I suppose some other features my not be able to be used because your thumb is busy on gas and brake? How much resistance do the gas & brake have?

I too use the HKS. But i have not played around with the settings, i'm more trying to get used to how shift2 handles. I find the top end cars, after works conversion are much easier to steer. If anyone cares to share their settings for the hks that makes a better drive, i would love to try.

Why not start with the Renown Tuning DS3 settings as a benchmark? I'm using the v2 settings.

ORDERED!!!

Amazon had a price drop, it's now $30.57. It will be here tomorrow morning!!! Gotta love Amazon Prime next day shipping even Saturdays via FedEx!

I called stores, my GameStop didn't even have a SKU for it. Best Buy, I would have to order online and pick it up 5-7 days later. AND pay full $40 retail price!

Fireststarter, I am very interested in your results!

Anyone else having issues with braking with the HKS... it is worse in GT5 as there isn't any fine tuning for the analog buttons - very hard not to lockup the brakes. In shift 2 I have tried turning the sensitity down to 5 - seems to help. It seems that the usable range is only within 5-10% of the full movement. Do I have a bad controller?

Have you tried the calibration trick? The G25 pedals need to be calibrated every time the game (such as GT5) is launched. The wheel calibrates we can plainly see. But the pedals don't go into their full range of motion until we do it.

Start the game and at a race, press the brake through it's full range. I suggest doing this with GT5 because we can see the gas and brake as they are applied.

InsideSimRacing discussed this with their recent video, full review of GT5.

I don't understand this... Does the game calibrate the range or the controller itself? And how would this work?

Anyway... I don't notice any locking brakes at all because I drive with ABS on. No need to handicap mysrlf if every real car in the world uses ABS anyway.

You don't hear the tire squeal and experience the nose dive in GT5 from hard braking? It seems more like digital input - on or off. Unless I am VERY light on the touch to brake in a more controlled manner.

I will have to try the calibrate as suggested.

Ah that's what you mean. But that's just hard braking... Brakes locking up is much worse because the car breaks out and becomes uncontrollable due to loss of grip. I only experience that if I completely disable ABS.

But you're right about the brake strength curve of the HKS: if you keep it in GT mode (switch on the back) the gas/brake curve is exponential and not linear for some reason. Switching to NFS mode helps a lot because the curves become more or less linear.

So you mean use the L2/R2 for brake and throttle? I did try that and yes it did seem easier to control the braking. Using the NFS mode then offers just an alternate method of steering if compared to the DS3.

No, I still use the 'pedals'. It just maps them l2 and r2 and applies a different strength curve. In GT5 you can clearly see the difference in behavior if you keep an eye on the throttle gauge on the screen.

Having a bit of a hard time dialing the settings to use this controller. Any tips?

This is what I use:

Steering deadzone 3
Steering sensitivity 5
Speed sensitivity 75

(Other settings based on Renown setup)

For me the most important setting by far is the "Steering lock" in the car tuning setup. I use 10-12 for most cars.
