Shift 2 Reviews

In all seriousness. The only thing I'm worried about is the wheel support and how the wheel reacts to the game.

I'm past playing with a pad and couldn't go back.

I wanted to try TDU2 but what I read about wheel problems just turned me away.

That's the only thing that could ruin it.
Not bothered by Bathursts weight gain in the slightest.

I posted a question at another site to the devs, and got a response... They assured me that the exaggerated 'wobbles' down the straights in Shift were a thing of the past, and that the wheels were being extensively playtested (which it's obvious Shift1's were not) before release.

How well this translates to EVERY wheel is a matter for conjecture, but being a DFGT user on PS3, I am pretty sure at least my combo is one of the most heavily tested setups.

All in all, I got enough direct feedback, and have read enough developer blogs to be assured that things are, at the very LEAST, going to be considerably better than Shift1. And, given how good the REST of even that old game was compared to the GT franchise, it made up my mind to pre-order.

Those extra 40 events are nothing to sneeze at, and I am willing to take the chance with S2U to get them. Despite its handling problems, I had more FUN with Shift and raced it MUCH more than GT5 has managed to tempt me into. Getting the wheel to work better will simply be the icing on the cake, IMO...

I don't get why you guys are making an issue about how this game will act in regards to steering wheels, this game is about as realistic as the behaviour of Katie Price's breast implants in relation to the real thing.

I played it yesterday and wasn't happy with it all. It just felt unrealistic as hell.

Care to elaborate on how it's unrealistic, either of you? Some of us haven't had the opportunity to play it yet and would appreciate the information rather than inflammatory statements.

The problem is that people don't really give the game a chance because they see the Need for Speed title and think arcade racer, NFS has made some great games with very memorable moments. How do we know that in year two they can't make adjustments to Shift to put it up there on the SIM racing block.

This game has a real shot to compete with Forza and GT on console (I don't play PC so I couldn't tell ya)

And for those of you who are saying it's not a real "sim" or it isn't going to feel the same, there are issues with both of our console sim racing games that could be harped on constantly.

In that preview another user posted a few pages back the talk about the AI being strong and aggresive and the genuine racing feel of this game is enough for me to want to buy it. I only hope they actually LIMIT you in this game and you can't just deck a car out and dominate the early races.

Not the case sadly, you have to limit yourself, otherwise you'll win the race with 5-10 sec marging each time.

There's different class D-C-B-A (the one I've seen so far) but if you put your car at the limit of the class, you pretty much dominate the race.

Does the game have AI difficulty? And if so are you playing on the hardest?

So if you can win races easily in your class even in elite mode how can you have some fun against competitive AI? Not tuning your car? Damn... here we go again..

I should have all three available to compare on Tuesday (Bought PC and rented XBOX and PS3 versions from Gamefly)

My PC setup is pretty High end: SLI / Triple Screen + I have a T500RS and Fanatec Wheels.

Framerate shows up in game with EVGA Precision app on my PC.

Sweet I look forward to reading your opinions.

I was going to add that I just go by word of mouth, trailers, and comments I read on forums. I'm pretty sure I'll get NFS Shift 2 tho it looks really, really, really classy

I try not to go by reviewers too much.

Anyone tried this on PS3 with a wheel yet(preferably G25/G27?). I never got around to play Shift 1 aside from the demo on PS3 and it was meh(doesn't help that when I finally did play the demo, the next day I got my GT5). The FFB on that was floaty. Not as bad as some other game has been, but not exactly what I'd call sim. Playable though. I know with the PC version there may be more salvation from modding, but my PC really is not on the forefront anymore, so I'd like to make use of my PS3 more....

Completely different cars and teams? The cars are pretty similar and the driver lineups for most of the top teams are unchanged.

I recommend giving it a shot. I'm amazed how good that game still is

This thread is getting rather close to a lock as it currently stands.

Back away from the 'anyone who plays X is a Y' comments and keep it on topic.

Anyone failing to do so will wind up with a two day holiday from GT Planet and may gain the honour of getting the thread locked.

The AUP applies whenver you post, follow it.

Scaff

I don't know what others are doing....but I have pretty intense competition on hard, I think the AI tune their car to match yours, because the race is just as close with a C500 and a C850 lotus.

Glad to hear it, did you tried arcade mode yet? Do you have a GT1 car in arcade? How is the AI in arcade?

That is good news!

There's no arcade mode but a "quick" mode, you can only use the car you bought, but you can select your track, time of day, no. of laps and no of AI rivals (up to 15), you can also select between a one make race or an AI selection of cars in the same class.

Now I am doing a MX5 one make to see how the AI is. :)

race done, 5 laps on leguna seca, I think the AI is the same as in career, I started in 9th and finished 2nd, so the AI isn't alien fast, I think about a second slower per a 1 min lap compare to my pace. I consider myself pretty quick (gold in focus ST seasonal) so that ain't shabby at all.

You can select the individual AI cars? :)
What about tracks, are they all available for use or do you have to unlock some like in GT5?

you can't individually selection them I am afraid.

I have yet scroll through the entire track list yet (it's long) but so far everything seem to be there.

Ah, I misunderstood then. You can select one-make, or just have the AI randomly select from similar vehicles?

Are the classes divided by car type? Meaning will the AI select race cars if I choose a fast super car? Sorry for some many questions on the details, but being able to set up single races with more specific restrictions and options is something I really missed in GT5.

"one make" means exact same model, exact same tune.

the other mode is "same class" which means random cars tune to similiar PI range.

I don't have any high tier car so everything I raced against so far are road cars, so I can't answer the latter part of your question.
