Should it matter that he was "only kidding"?

Seau says he was kidding with 'watermelon' remark

By TIM REYNOLDS, Associated Press Writer
October 22, 2003
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- Dolphins linebacker Junior Seau insists he meant no harm when he suggested the way to stop former teammate LaDainian Tomlinson is to feed him fried chicken and watermelon.

Tomlinson, whose Chargers face the Dolphins on Monday night, could not immediately be reached for comment. The Dolphins had no immediate word on whether Seau would be disciplined for the remark.

Asked Wednesday how to limit Tomlinson, San Diego's running back, Seau told reporters: ``You give him watermelon and load him up with fried chicken and tell him to keep eating.''

Ridiculous. Who cares. It's a harmless stereotype that black people eat watermellon and fried chicken. It's true! I used to drive through a neighborhood in Chicago that was all black and there'd be trucks filled with watermellon for sale. Fried chicken chains were in abundance, as well. Frankly, I was envious.

We call Japanese cars and motorcycles rice. People make Irish drunk jokes and Italian pepperoni jokes and Indian curry jokes and nobody cares. Why is anything having to do with black poeple so taboo? Why is everybody so hypersensitive about it? I'd hate to be black for this very reason alone, knowing everybody is afraid to say anything or just act natural.

So he made a comment that referred to the man's race, but not in a derogatory way. I bet Tomlinson couldn't care less.

Only the government is allowed to notice that there are differences between groups of people.

I hate being white for the very same reason.

If Seau was white, even though he is Tomlinson's friend,.... his career would've been over the minute the words came out.

RER's right.

Flat out, this comment means nothing and it's sad that our country (America) has come to the point where kidding between friends, or light hearted teasing is now an unacceptable hate crime.

Racism, and political correctness have taken a toll on this country and this is just one more example.

Nonsense, everybody can say whatever the hell they want about white people, it's never considered racist.

What I meant was opposite..... I cant say shit about them but they can say whatever they want about me.

Unfortunately, I think GK read me wrong too.....

We are all equal, therefore, racism, in theory, shouldnt exist. But as long as it does,.. we need political correctness around to keep it in check,....

And I'm not even sure if PC is the corrcect terminology. People need to flat out stop taking things so personally. The generation today is total different than anyother. I think it's SHOULD be ok for SEAU to say the things he did,.. but until the babyboomers are dead, what he said will be considered wrong.

God friggin damn-it it's soooooo confusing. I pity the generation that had to grow up during segregation. They are all so close minded (most of you, I apologize to the clear minded ones here).

Sometimes, I'm completely ashamed of being around my uncles and such,... cause their so friggin racist. I know it's not about how your borught up, it's about society around you WHEN your brought up. They ALWAYS were racist, yet, I always looked from the outside in, thinking, I dont have a problem with black people from what I can tell,.. why do they talk about them that way.

Anyhow, before I get into an uncomprehendable rant (too late :P ),..,. in a nutshell, I think that SEAU should be repremanded for his remarks. He is supposed to be a roll-model,.... even if he was "only kidding".

Some of my relatives are total bigots, too. I forget about it and out of nowhere they start spouting off some offensive, ignorant things. I'm not going to argue with an old man, there's no point. But I feel tacitly responsible for not correcting them. The consolation is that people die and their beliefs go with them.

It shouldn't matter even if he were totally serious. I'd rather he were serious, because as milefile said it's a harmless stereotype.

It does seem like there is a double standard when cracking jokes about races, though. I can't make a black joke without being a racist, but blacks can make white jokes.

I really like it when it is justified by saying that blacks were enslaved by whites.

I hate it. It gave me a guilty conscience and I ended up selling all my slaves.

Bigotry is bigotry reguardless who says it or if they say " I was just kidding". I'm sick of people hating other people just because they are not the same as them.To a certain extent I am guilty of it and I hate that about me.
Outside appearances shouldn't matter. So why do they?
Isn't it what's on the inside of a person that truely matters? Then why do we care so much what they look like? I just don't get it I guess.

People who make "racist" (Not really racist, more along the lines of, uh..Racial influenced? I don't know.) jokes shouldn't really get flak, and most who do it with their good friends don't.

When I had my Spanish girlfriend, I'd crack jokes like "Whadda you call 50 Mexicans running down a hill? Jailbreak". When I had a black girlfriend, she'd be the one telling me the black jokes, because even she thought they were funny.

It's really sad when "minority groups" in this country can get away with saying whatever they want about white people, but if we don't like it, it's our fault for enslaving them/opressing them/whatever it is this week.

Seau's been playing for the Chargers since he graduated from USC in 1990, though he went to the Dolphins this year. So far he's had more than 1,100 tackles including 48 sacks, 15 interceptions for a total of 210 yards, and he's forced 12 fumbles, which is pretty brilliant.

In politics, if you make a comment like his, your career is over. In football, it has to do with how good you are - and Seau's good.

(PS - I'm sure this statement can't be taken as personal, but if you do take it as such, it isn't meant to be as such and shouldn't be taken as such)

RER, I know the history between you two, but in all honesty I thought he was making a real, on-topic post.

Oh sure,.. it was on topic,... but he pushes my buttons with that BS disclaimer everytime.... he knows it, I know it, everyone knows it,... I dont have to take it in the rear like a chump everytime he replies to one of my posts.

Ya, ya,,.. it was uncalled for, I apologize to anyone who had to read it,.. accept him.

Actually, and completely in truth, that disclaimer is meant to not piss you off - in the past, you used to take every single thing I said as an invitation to scream at me for a personal attack, so I decided that would be the best way to stop it. It worked, too, until now. I guess I'll have to find some other way to get through to you that not every single remark I make to you is a personal insult.

holy crap,... dude,... obviously, I cant tell you not to post in my topics,.. it's a free country.

Understand this then,... from here on out, do whatever the F you want, say whatever you want,... just remember, it will be pointless to me, cause your dead to me. I can honestly say your about the only individual on this entire planet that I litteraly despise,.... now that's out in the open and we can end this charade. I'm finally deciding on taking advantage of the user ignore button. Have a nice life......

I dunno, but it's funny how every race or nationality can be separated by food. Not that it's all that nice to say, but who hasn't heard these things before?

We call Mexicans beaners.
We call Oriental people rice eaters.
We call Irish drinkers.
We call Jews bagels.
We call your standard Whitey a white-bread (sounds like White Bread).
blah blah blah.

It's the same with every frickin type of people. We mock them by the type of food we eat because we're animals. That's right, we distinguish different types of people. And since we have an instinct to eat, we call people by what we eat. Well, that's my theory.

The first time I ever ate curry I loved it and ate a lot of it. The next day I was sweating and I could smell it. I thought to myself "this explains why cab drivers smell the way they do." Does that make me a racist?
