Should Tires Make This Much Difference?!?

I ran probably ten races with a Ferrari 599 '06 in the Professional all Ferrari contest B-Spec. And I could never quite overtake the one or two Enzos that were invariably in the race. The best I could finish was second (assuming only one Enzo). Then I noticed that I was running Sports Hard tires and the rules allowed for up to Sports Soft tires. So I switched. And won by 15 seconds. Should tires, especially just going from Sports Hard to Sports Soft, make THAT much of a difference?

It has always seemed to me that tires make the biggest difference of all. It's between sliding all over the place and winning big time.

My driver was actually holding the 599 on the track pretty well with the hards. Which is why I was shocked at the difference with the softs. I guess the driving lines being cleaner in every corner just add up.

Yes. Tires are the best upgrade in real life. A pair of slicks will usually mean 2/3 sec per lap if not more (depending on the track/car of course..).

The softer the tyre, the more grip you get. This means that, as well as better cornering, you will get less tyre slip when accelerating, meaning your car will do better on the straights as well.

well explained :P

IMO tyres should make the difference, yes :P

The Apex book I got with the Collectors Edition a bit of a drivers bible ^^. It detailedly explains the different levels of grip you get in corners when decellerating because of the shift in weight.

Very interesting stuff, at least to me. :D

Well from a standpoint of gameplay i think racing soft slicks are way to good!
Sure i like them, but it makes all other tires a bit pointless. They are so good i buy them for cars which are worth the same money than these tires.

When you put racing slicks on a low-power car you can pretty much do anything with it. It's super grippy and since the car doesn't have much oomph it becomes hard to do anything wrong. It is however accurate because it really would be like that in real life.

I guess it would have made sense to have some sort of restriction on tire usage on regular joe cars. Maybe only up to Sports or something.

Softer tires mean they can exert more torque without slipping, in short they have a lower slip ratio compared to something harder (like the comfort tires) parse. They are undoubtedly one of the most important component on the car, especially being the only component that actually touches the ground.

That is really true! However you have yet to consider the wear on the tires. On a quick run around trial mountain, a soft compound racing tires will wear by the 3rd or 4th lap, and will be next to nonexistent by the 5th. So a good set up to back the tires is also crucial, otherwise the detrimental effects will be amplified through grip loss through wear, understeer will harbour onto no-steer. I learned that when driving on N'ring for TWO LAPS on soft compound with a poor set up resulting in poor control over the car.

Cheers

Tires are the only part of the car that actually come in contact with the road. So naturally, they can make the biggest difference.

One of the first upgrades I consider in Top Cars are Soft Racing Tyres, the best 36000 Cr you can spend on a car.
