Heh. Didn't see this thread before. I don't own a smart (for the record, the company spells all its models in lower-case), but I do like them and I'm definitely going to try and get hold of a roadster at some stage.
I've driven a few smarts though. Two electric fortwo models (my reviews are
here and
here) and the cdi diesel convertible fortwo model (
review here).
You have to recalibrate your expectations a little before driving one. If you step into it expecting a sports car and your idea of driving fun is literally all about getting between point A and B as quickly as possible, then you're not going to appreciate what it offers.
I find lots of cars fun in different ways. My old MX5 was fun because of the handling, feel and sound. My Beetle is fun despite being so slow because it feels so mechanical and attracts attention. The smart is fun because it feels so different to what you expect from a car.
Handling is okay for a tall, narrow vehicle. The steering is pretty good and it's nippy, if not actually fast. And as long as you're not doing many drag races, the semi-auto gearbox isn't nearly as bad as people make out. And there's something satisfying about how little space you take up on the road and how unique it feels.
So yeah, guess you could call me a convert. Before I'd driven one, I wasn't keen.
Ideally I'd have one of these in my garage. More than possible over the next year or so:
