Do I happen to be the first to come up with this simple observation and idea:

In a group of cars contacts will be almost inevitable,
while driving up front alone is obviously completely save!

So, the penalty/SR system should respect/reflect this simple fact and be less strict the more cars are involved!

Take me as an example, I am an average driver. I generally try to avoid contact,
but I will not give up my position to an aggressive driver, just to avoid the SR-.
Sometimes, I get pole (on favorite tracks) and just drive ahead of the pack for the whole day. My SR rating goes up to S.
How does that make sense? I did not do anything to earn this!
Other times I am in the middle of the pack and get bumped front and rear, left and right.
My SR rating drops to E, even though I tried to avoid contact for the most part!
But in a group of 4 ambitious guys it is just impossible!

Note added:
I am OK with penalties. The issue is more about the SR rating itself.
The SR rating should not suffer as much as it does if driving in a wild group.
And it should not recover just by driving around on your own.

I don't see a suggestion for a simple improvement here.

Also, if your SR drops to E, there's a chance that you are not the clean driver you think you are (at least on the current rather lenient rules, it has been different in the past esp. for A and S rated drivers).

Sometimes I find myself in a battle with others. Sometimes I run most of the race alone. If it works out similarly for everyone the current system is working fairly.

My points are

1. the SR rating should simply have a little longer term memory.
2. the SR should include proximity of opponents (no opponent -> no +SR, many opponents -> less -SR)

I'm not saying that I am a clean driver, but today I went from E to S (by just dominating the fields and avoiding battles)
Other times I just get wrecked while trying my best to avoid contact (can't stop racing, though).

  1. No it shouldn’t, a bank of dirty races could be built up, it has to react to what happens in the moment.
  2. Racecraft is racecraft, its the same in a group of cars as it is by yourself. So if I’m in a group of cars your suggestion would mean I can rub doors more forcefully - its much easier to have a simple rule, contact = the same -SR for everyone in every contact.

There is no racecraft or clean driving when you are 3.0sec ahead.
You should only get +SR if driving in a group without contact.
More than currently, to compensate for the loss when contacts occur...

your mindset is wrong here i guess.
you would "punish" drivers that choose their race strategy to stay away from traffic and trouble.
Making an undercut to get on clean air and track would mean you get no SR benefit for racing smart!

i had dirty races too. but to be honset, if you drop SR back to E, you might not be as clean as you think.
i also feel like the game does make a difference if someone has "slight contact" or smashes your side mirror by divebombing from 300+ meters behind.
That's not "racing", thats stupid as both get slowed down massivly and drop off the front pack.

SR isn't just about contact with other cars...

You have a good point about no +SR when driving alone. A big problem are the yoyo drivers. They'll push people off the road not caring about SR which the game rewards by giving them easier wins. Drop SR below 90 and you already get easier lobbies, a DR reset is like candy for easy wins. And ofcourse then they start on pole, run ahead and the game drops them back with the SR.S crowd.

Either the game needs to look at past behavior to make it a lot harder for habitual offenders to get back to SR.S or not reward +SR for simply staying on the road for a sector.

You wouldn't just eliminate SR+ for being alone on track completely. Reducing the rate at which it is gained would be enough. Have a SR bonus for a perfect race though (no offs, no cuts), and reward those who can battle without contact.

The system can definitely be improved, but no matter how good or bad it is, some will always manage to meta game it.

PD could just implement car damage on the daily races. I'm sure that would make a ton of drivers stop hitting each other or at least thinking three times before making an impossible move into a corner or something.
