Simulated driver or static view?

I guess I'd particularly like to hear the opinions from the guys with real life racing experience on this, but anyway:

The Shift 2 team are really pushing the 'drivers' battle' with the game, but I'm wondering if those that actually race like the idea of this, or feel it is just tacky? Can replicating that really be done well?

Would you rather have:

Static view, no camera shakes, no added effects.

Replication of what it's like in the car, i.e. head shakes/look to apex/distorted view and sound effects when crashing/speed effects/simulated G-forces.

Note I'm saying the physics would be the same in both situations, but the visual representation is different. I'm interested to see what those who race in RL would find more appealing/satisfying :)

I personally think for doing hotlaps I'd use a static bonnet cam, but for enjoying the game I'd use the cockpit view with all the effects.

Shift 1 managed a great balance in hood cam, IMO. You still got enough of the crash effects and speed blur to tell that you were REALLY cooking along, but not the extreme of GT5's cockpit cam head shake, which is nausea inducing! Look to apex and restricted vision is OK for cockpit view, I guess (I'm not a big fan, but look-to-apex might make me change my mind).

GT5's hood (ornament!) cam doesn't really replicate the kinesthetics of speed very well. Driving a LMP car or a Fiat500 looks pretty similar. Plus, you don't get in car rain and wipers, and you can't see the car corners to judge contact and apexes. For us hood cam guys, I don't think SMS need to change much at ALL.

Simulated driver or static view is more the GT5 philosophy. Shift manages to blend some of the two in hood cam, and is by far the better for it, IMO.

Well I have no personal expierence with racing.
But I was moving 300km/h ~ 190mp/h on the german Autobahn.
Even though it was just a straight ride. I bumped up and down on the seat and my vision was blured because I couldnt focus on things going by,It was way too fast. It was an awesome experience.
So yes give us rather a human emotional shaky view with advanced motion blur and G-Force effects. Than some boring static camera.

I can remember the G-forces but i do not remember any visual shaking when i'm racing, i think the brain filters that out. I do agree about blurring the sides when going at high speed.

I would like the head tracking to be implemented instead of an algorithm figuring out where i want to look.

Shift 1 had a perfect cockpit view. There is quite a bit of shaking, but its the car shaking around you so the view of the road stays relatively stable...unlike the seizure inducing GT5 head shake...

I agree , The car was shaking in Shift because your head bounces around in the car. But your vision stays stable to the road or other things in front of you because you are focused and brain and eyes filter the shakes. In GT5 it's pretty annoying going at high speeds through corners because the view vibrates way too much and not the cockpit itself. :scared:

I'm fine with Shifts virsuals it feels natural.

Only experience with 'shake' effect is with GT5; agree car should shake but not 'eyeballs'; sometimes does make me nauseous; depends on speed and car (view-amount of windshield, etc.) being driven.

The thing is, head tracking introduces another level of overhead for the already taxed PS3. If we want larger grids, and better graphics, AND smooth high frame-rate racing, we have to give up SOMETHING...

Look to apex, especially if it can be disabled quickly, temporarily. maybe with a button on the pad or wheel, seems to be the better solution, and doesn't make you HAVE to go out and buy an expensive peripheral...

I bet Sony insisted on it for GT5, just so they would sell more PlayStation Eye's ;)

This 👍

Quite right.

Epileptic GT5 cockpit view!
