Hi there, as you may have read in the Schrodinger's Cat Band Thread, I have now taken over Lead Vocals in my band. But, I'm having a few problems. I bellow the notes out and it's sounds fine, not great but not bad. However I seem to be struggling with a shortage of breath during a song, and by the time I've got to the chorus, I've got nothing left to let the notes fly out and it sounds very flat and generally crap. As you can imagine, this is very annoying and as we've got a gig in 3 weeks I need to improve, rapidly. Any help would be really appreciated.

I'm noy a great singer, but I'm alright. I would suggest practice, and a slight change in technique. Try singing a little bit quieter and don't hold the notes quite as long. This will use less breath and let you catch your breath more.

Hopefully this helps, it might not though...

Try breathing in your stomach rather than the chest, not only is it better on your voice. It makes it easier to go for longer. ;) If you are already doing that... I suggest practice, for me practice was a big help in the line of holding notes. Sometimes even different sounds are easier to use, like a ooooh seems to be harder to hold for as long as you can hold a yeah.

I'd say that vibrato will hide any note incorrections, which while partially true I don't think you'd be able to do a controlled vibrato.

I suggest you take singing lessons, it will help you in all areas and most importantly the breathing. They can be expensive, but even just a few can be worth it, especially if you're in a band performing live.

In my singing lessons it hasn't seemed like I was learning anything. But you are actually learning and improving. So I would also recommend this. With a good teacher you can learn surprisingly quickly.
