Hi,

I've been a fan of the GT series from the first installment and own them all up to gt4. There's a question on my mind however, and i hope some of you have more insight into this: how is it that skid marks aren't implemented in #5 and yet more advanced features such as weather and night racing made their way in? I've never been able to understand why PD have never simulated this basic feature into GT.

Thanks.

To be honest, only god knows the answer and what goes on in PD's weird but intelligent minds.

Just a few days ago Kazunori told in an interview that skid marks are little details wich aren´t important...

I´think it´s the same thing like driving without gasoline, because it´s not realistic...

I think it's fairly safe to say that Kazunori Yamauchi simply doesn't deem skid marks important. He puts emphasis on other things in the game, and since the Gran Turismo series is his brain child, things that are not important to him are not high up on the to-do-list.

Probably because most sane people couldn't care less about skidmarks?

for some reason the above post rings very true...stop this nonsense about skidmarks!

Will wipers work during the rain?
Is that important thing for Kazunori too?
:)

To put things in perspective, I think that noone is in the position to tell anyone how important or unimportant a certain feature in the game is. Skidmarks may not improve the driving experience in any way, but they certainly add to the realism of the game. And everyone is entitled to have his and her very own opinion on how to rate a feature in terms of importance.

A lot of people don't really care about skidmarks, which is fine. Those people however shouldn't tell the ones who do that they are idiots. Some guys tend to see the little things and pieces, some prefer to enjoy the big picture. What's wrong with that?

KY, PD and Sony are playing games. They have deliberately released very little information about GT5 and what they have has been very ambiguous. The time trial demo is very stripped down and they've not shown much at the shows. As far as I'm concerned KY did not state that there were no skidmarks, he said players should not be concerned about them which to me could mean two things, 1. He reckons skidmarks are unimportant or 2. No one should be concerned that skidmarks won't be in GT5.

There's something about the TT demo that makes me lean toward option 2.

With Le Mans races, the main priority is fuel usage because you are given a limited amount to race with.Remember the '88 24hr race, where one of the Porsches had to coast into the pit lane. The reason was, the driver used full turbo boost to pass one of the Silk Cut Jags & run out of fuel.

skid marks in games tend to look bad, so I can understand why PD does not want them.
And resource hungry because it's another thing on the track that has to be drawn dynamicly and kept in place

Skid marks, just like fully detailed trees are fairly simple things to achieve. With Gran Turismo 5 there are probably millions of similarly simple things happening in every frame and every one of those very simple things becomes a little bit less simple to get perfect each time minor things like this are added.

Yes they could probably very easily get fantastic looking skid marks and SpeedTree vegetation but only by either increasing the time used to optimise the game code or by reducing other areas of the game.

For me, both are just so insignificant when looking at them in the context of Gran Turismo 5 as a whole.

What do you think of the skidmarks already on the track in the TT demo?

Skid Marks on their own are pretty insignificant. Just like reverse lights are pretty insignificant. Just like 3D trees are insignificant. The more insignificant things you add together, the more a detached you start to feel from the game, which is why its important to just deal with all these insignificant things and then forget about it. No one talks about how a game is so awesome because it has skid marks and reverse lights... they just DO have them and thats it.

Uggh.

He never said they won't be in there. It's a minute feature, it may or may not be in there. it's a mystery! Stop complaining until you know for a fact that they aren't in the final game.

Lock!

It's funny though. The game has over 1000 cars, and all these other cool features, 500,000 Polygons or whatever it is per car blah blah blah.. possibly going to be the best racing game of this decade and yet some people still manage to find stupid little things to complain about. As WolfRacer said.. these things are insignificant. It never ends does it?

ok, but they're part of the road texture. Most probably hand drawn. Generating them in real time is a different thing altogether.
And IMO significant tyre marks are usually generated over a period of time rather than a single event

Why you worry so much about this? Seriously ... Okay, it would be very good, see some donuts around the track and stuff ... but think well, that aspect would increase your driving experience? It's just a visual concept, part of the race environment and experience tied to the virtual environment, but nothing to do with the factor simulation itself. Windshield wipers for example, has much more to do with the driving experience, because they are fundamental to a race in heavy rain ...

He also said that one insignificant thing on its own doesn't really matter, but lots of insignificant things added together can make you feel detached from the game. He then went on to explain that it is important for these insignificant little things to be dealt with, because most racing games DO have them. I completely agree.

What never ends? People stating only part of what somebody else wrote so that on its own it backs up their feelings too?

In a weird way i sort of agree with both of you (Even though your opinions conflict). Skidmarks are insignificant in my eyes, i don't see what the fuss is about. As for all the little things added together, thats the whole reason why i like GT in the first place, because its the first racing/driving game i really got to grips with and liked. I've strayed to other games but theres always something missing and i always want to go back to GT. Its not the graphics, theres a lot more to it than that.

I sort of have the opposite opinion here - i don't see why people can dismiss skidmarks as something not needed. I feel not having skidmarks detracts from the experience, it's less immersive...
