This has just recently started to happen and it is very frustrating. There are certain songs it wont play and if i search for them it will either take me back to the menu or freeze when i try to play them. The songs work on everything else just fine, and as far as i know they are just 320kbps .mp3 files (non variable).

Ive tried using winamp to sync the files, i have restored it several times, tried an older version of itunes etc... so far nothing is working. It seems like this is been going on for awhile and apple has yet to do anything about it, at least from what i have gathered from the internet.

If anyone has any helpful info, it would be appreciated.

Also, are there any media players that function like a USB (and hold 120 or more gb's). My ipod is primarily used in my car synced to my deck.

Sounds like the hard drive is failing if it can't play some songs. ipods use 1.8" hard drives from what I've read. Though they still sell the ipod Classic and have a 160GB version.

I hate to tell you this but it sounds like your iPod's fixing to die. I have had this happen to two iPods thus far. One was a 120gb and the other a 160gb. I had these same symptoms in both for a little while, then it finally would only show the picture of the apple, which is I guess iPod's version of the YOLD. I am now on my second 160.

...dang, that sucks. I bought a 120gb refurbished from Gamestop, but I have already had it too long to send it back and have them refund me or give me a new one. I guess i will eventually have to pony up 250$ and get 160 when this one kiks it.

How long did your first 160gb last before it started failing?

Thanks for the help :)

I might be able to help you, I have an old iPod which started to make a clicking HDD noise, wouldn't load songs, freezing, dead iPod/file/apple logo etc... now its fixed. Firstly is yours clicking loads when you put it to your ear? if yes then read on....

Provided you are willing to open it up all you have to do (I know it sounds crazy but it has a very high success rate) is jam a piece of folded card in-between the HDD and the metal back. Also take the HDD out (unplug the ribbon cable) and give it a very very gentle tap on the corners then put it back in. This was recommended by someone on a forum and it worked for many others.

There's an explanation for why doing this usually solves the problem but its not really important. Its worth giving it a try if your OK with the chance that it might not work.

I havent noticed it clicking too much, and it only freezes if i search for that song and give it no choice but to try and play it. The files were from a compilation and all were the same format and so on. It just skips those certain songs all together and starts playing the next song like nothing happened, no stuttering or odd sounds. As of yet there are 6 songs i know for sure do it (from a compilation of 32) and i am now paying closer attention to the tracks to see if any others do.

For now i will just have to deal with being unable to listen to a few songs out of 4500+... Its annoying to know the songs, but i cant listen to them; but i clearly see them on my ipod, but they dont work on ipod... smh

Thank you Robin for the info though, If i notice the clicking i have no problem taking it apart. lol

My first 160 lasted about a year, but it was one of the first batch of 160s, and I used it ALOT. I used it almost every day for 10-12 hours a day, in hazardous/ dirty conditions (HVAC construction work). This is about how long my 120 lasted also.

I just read your post about it skipping some certain songs. Have you tried reuploading the songs to iTunes and syncing 'em again? It might help.

Have you tried restoring the iPod through iTunes? the one which completely wipes it? Because overtime the hard drive gets terribly fragmented as you add and remove songs, as there is no way of defragging it can loose the positions of songs and get bad sectors when it trys to cache them.

Also are the song's which are being skipped ones purchased from the iTunes store? If so then they will be skipped by the iPod if the device hasn't been synced with the relevant account on a computer in a while as a DRM measure.

Yeah ive done the Restore (several times lol), and the songs were not purchased from itunes either, i only have a few and they all work fine. I can put the songs that dont work on my ipod in a flash drive and it will play in my car or any other device.

After the restore i still had the same problems.

I have not tried the re uploading the songs though..
