The Skoda Octavia is the mid sized saloon/estate car produced by Skoda since 1996 and is heavily based on the VW Passat with around 5,000,000 units sold worldwide. The car is notable for achieving instant success on European markets, becoming a standard-issued vehicle for taxis and police cars in both Eastern and Western Europe for it's practicality, simplicity, roomy interior and quality design, also with a reasonable price, and helped Skoda shift their reputation from building poor quality, unreliable cars.
The Octavia went into it's 3rd generation (Typ 5E) in 2013 with a wide range of trim and engine options. At the bottom of the range is the 1.2 TSI S while the 2.0 TSI VRS is the top range model. The 2.0 TSI VRS is powered by a 2.0 TSI Inline 4 sourced from Volkswagen's Passat and produces 220HP, all going to the front wheels, with the help of a turbocharger.
Like some German performance cars it comes with a 6 speed DSG gearbox, although it is only available in the VRS model. The saloon version of the car has been noted as completing a lap of the Nurburgring Nordschliefe in 8:30, making it quicker than a Cadillac CTS-V and Lotus Exige. The estate version managed a lap time of 8:53, matching the time set by a Golf V GTI, but still being faster than a Porsche Boxster 986.
