Now this is one you guys probably didn't expect to see in "Other Racing". But it's still on the topic (:

Does anyone here have a slot car collection? More than just a Tyco set pulled out of the box that is. I've seen some really good looking cars on the web, and some really cool tracks too. There is a guy that has a Formula 1 collection where he's modeled most of the cars from the past few years. That would be so much fun! And probably cheaper than my model train collection.

Speaking of ... I need to drag that stuff out of the attic and do something with it.

Friend of ours has got one - the little rally cars actually have 4WD.

I won't get one - I play golf, surf, hack about on the PS2 and laptop, ride my bike - I don't really need another hobby.

It is dirty big fun though....

One of the sites I was looking at, the guy's cars actually had front wheel steering! It's forced steering of course, but it adds that little extra touch of realism. I imagine it would be really cool on the open wheeled cars like the Formula 1 stuff.

If I was going to take the financial plunge on something like that, I'd build my own track by hand. There would be like six lanes that were close enough together for only three cars wide. In the curves they'd get even closer together. With a staggered start, it could be interesting. Then you make it long, hilly, and curvey, like Leguna Seca, and play for hours and hours ...

Have you ever seen the really serious slot car racers - those things are freaky!

I'm afraid I don't know what you're refering to. There are some big old ones that I've seen on lots of guy's sites. And there are some people that have built enourmous tracks with all the scenery and everything. Looks like a nice 1/86.4 scale model (at least I think that's the HO ratio ...) and it fills an entire room. Yeah, it's crazy stuff.

The absolute top line stuff are basically a wing with an electric motor under it - they are insanely fast - it's basically a huge power battle.
