So I read about the disk read error...

And I tried to fix it myself by opening my ps2.
I removed the 8 lids from my fat ps2
thus I also removed the 8 screw beneath those lids.
I tried to take the bottom lid off, but it didn't let me..
I tried shaking it a bit, but it didn't work.
I tried pulling it a bit hard and also much harder, but that didn't work either.

Anyone who can help me out with this stupid electrical device..?:)
 
Are you sure you've unscrewed all screws? You may have forgotten 2 of them, they can be small, that's how I ruined my first controller, by pulling too hard :lol:
 
I'll see what I can look up on the internet about similar problems :cheers:

Ok, I've got some more links for you to check out, I've looked over my PS2 as well, and I only spot 6 rubber squares. However, as there 10, I'm starting to wonder whether those 4 squares (the ones the PS2 rests on when placed vertically) on the sides are also to be removed...

That very last link reports 8 screws to be removed...
 
I know this may sound stupid but have you opened the stickers and the rubber grips/sponges (or whatever you called it) it maybe hidden amongst those thing so you have to go check it.
 
I pulled off my network adapter, i pulled off the rubber and plastic
lids just on top of the screws, and I can't see anything else on the outside
of my ps2 that can or should be pulled off...
 
This may be a little dangerous with PS2's but whenever I'm opening up a controller and I can get it off, I stick something in it, like the tip of my screwdriver and go along the edge to see where it stucks...
 
Okay,it has 10 screws to be removed.8 at the bottom of the console and 2 behind the console (where the fan was...) i checked my ps2 and maybe there was 10 screws.But i'm not sure about that either.....
 
I just checked with my fat Ps2.

There were 4 rubber & 2 plastic covers on the base, and 2 more plastic covers on the lip underneath the power & eject buttons.
I removed the 8 screws beneath these covers, and turned the console over. The top of the console then easilly slipped off. To remove the bottom cover I had to remove two more screw inside the console either side of the controller ports.
 
Is this really safe? I just tried it, and my PS2 broke. That's it. It won't even turn on. Is there any way to solve this, or is this the real point of no return? PLEASE HELP! I'M GETTING RESTLESS!
 
You probably snapped the cable that runs from underneath the disk tray to the power and eject buttons. That seems to be the most common problem that people have when they take apart their PS2s.

that happend to me took me about 1 hour to get the flat cable connected...:crazy:

or it could be that you gave a jolt of static to the system :scared:
 
So, with these tutorials, you can actually solve the red spinner of doom?
All I got from my searches on this forum was that I couldn't solve it and I should buy a new ps2...
 
I solved mine, it used to come every time it loaded but not it only comes once a day or two first I removed all the scratches from the CD (using toothpaste) and I let the game warm up about 10-15 min before I play. Lately I haven't seen the error for a while lets hope I didn't jinx myself:scared::dunce:
 
Hell yeah you can get rid of the red disk of doom! If you open up the PS2 and adjust the height of the laser, you can adjust it until it reads consistently.

I was given a PS2 awhile ago, and was just told that it was "broken". I turned it on and immediately tried all sorts of disks. The only thing that would read was a DVD and even then it only read half the time.

I opened up the PS2 and started adjusting the laser, click by click on the wheel and then trying different disks. I got it to read silver PS2 disks, then blue ones, and then the black PS1 disks.

It took about an hour's worth of fiddling around with it, but I finally got it to load up every kind of disk every time. I haven't had a DRE since. Nothing better than a free PS. :D

Just google for a guide on how to adjust the PS2 laser, and it will more than likely fix your problem.
 
Thanks Observer and Slowman.:) I'm with a fat ps2 from 2002, haven't cleaned or opened it , so that could be the problem too. I'll work through the guide at the beginning of this thread.

Thanks, but a quick check of things revealed that the ribbon was not disconnected and, in light of the fact that the person in link 1 used tweezers in the electronically sensitive parts, those were probably not the case.

The situation: it was my older brother's PS2, and now he just speaks to me if he wants to insult me. Now I have to pay for all the costs of a new PS2 (a fat one, it plays PS1 games) and I am alone in all this!

P.S: Is that how one gives a jolt to an electronic system?
