At least 73 people have been killed in clashes between rival fans following a football match in the Egyptian city of Port Said, state television reports.

The deaths occurred as supporters invaded the pitch after a game between top-tier clubs Masry and al-Ahly on Wednesday.

The BBC's Jon Leyne says a lack of the usual level of security in the stadium may have contributed to the clashes.

BBC News.

For a soccer match. How sad can it be. :dunce:👎

Wow 73 is a huge number of deaths for a football match, must be hell for their family members and friends to hear this. :nervous:

When I saw the number of casualties I was genuinely shocked. Such a sad turn of events.

Another match in Cairo that was stopped after news of the events taking place in Port Said came through resulted in some acts of violence (fires started in parts of the stadium), but thankfully that hasn't errupted any further as far as I'm aware.

Thugs i feel for the innocents that where trapped in stadium , other than that let them kill each other.

They just got rid of a dictator and now this happens over a soccer match? What is wrong with this world?
