Soft Top Security

Hi

I am considering purchasing a Mazda MX-5 NC Soft Top, but I am concerned about the security of the soft roof. I've never heard many horror stories to be honest, but has anyone out there had a soft top car that's been knifed or targeted? It's a gorgeous car, but this is a real concern. I mean, it'll spend a lot of its time parked in works car park...

Thanks.

Tim

My Mk1 was stolen, but I'd not say it was solely down to the soft top. It wasn't slashed, I just believe they got in by pulling the window back to slide something down and unlock the door. And I had zero security measures, so it probably wasn't hard to hotwire. As far as theft goes, an NC will be no easier than any other modern-ish car. If you live in a dodgy area though, I'd be more concerned about the vandalism aspect.

I had an NB soft-top for a good while, never had any problems, even in Manchester. It was occasionally parked in Wythenshawe too, and still no problems. The obvious rules apply; no valuables/liftables on display. Most scallies will break a window if they want to, the soft-top isn't really any less secure.

As @homeforsummer says the vandalism aspect is the main worry... but I still wouldn't worry too much unless, as he says, you live in a dodgy area. In my opinion; to slash the guy's got to be carrying a knife, there's a lot less of that than there used to be.

Thanks, its put me a little at ease. The sad thing is, the area I live in is lovely! Full of old people etc., but the area just next to where I live is pretty rough, so rough people sometimes hang around our street :(

I assume the NC will have an alarm anyway?

The NC would have an alarm, immobiliser, etc. It's kinda hard to name a modern car that wouldn't at least have those.

The NC of course came with a hardtop Roadster Coupe version if you're concerned about it.

Ah that's ok. I would, but they're quite a bit more expensive, probably cheaper to get this one and eventually get a hard top for it.

Now's the time to buy the clip-on hardtop... the prices go mad from September-to-March ;)

I never put the hardtop on mine, always had the roof down unless it was raining. Northern, you see :D

I've had several cars broken into and the one thing in common is that something was visible that "looked" valuable. Could have been anything whether it was a clothing bag, a box, a lump covered by a jacket or anything. Make sure the car is spotless inside and you'll attract less attention of the junkies looking for a score. The professionals will get you if your car happens to be what they are looking for. Put some dents all around and they won't want it either ;)

Best thing to be in the habit of is to not have anything visible in the cockpit and hope that nobody wants the radio or to steal the whole car.

My best luck with a convertible was to leave the top down. Never lost anything when the top was down, only when it was up and doors locked.
