Sometimes ghost, sometimes collision...?

I am still trying to make sense of the ghosting system in GT Sport. I understand there are settings in the lobbies where you can indicate "strong" ghosting, or other settings. But there doesn't seem to be any consistency with the collisions I'm having on the track.

I'm not proud of the following instance but it is the best example I can come up with: I got punted hard off course by another driver (he was just a pr_ick) and when I went to return the favor -- in nearly identical track circumstances -- his car ghosted and I went through him, flying off course all by myself. I don't do vengeance often and I'm not asking because I want to play dirty and fake out everyone else. I just want to know...

What are the criteria used by the game to decide when to ghost and when not to? Is there something a player can do to make their car ghost at will? Or if they are ghosted, to make their car become solid at will?

Idk for sure, but in my experiences of watching other cars get ghosted, it seems to occur most when the offense appears to be on purpose and completely unavoidable. I think the system they have in place is able to detect things like brakes applied, steering angle, distance between vehicles etc. and make a decision on when to ghost and not based on the probability of avoidance.

I dont know either but I cant tell you with 100% certainty that my car (the TT) should have been ghosted while coming back on to the track after this offroad excursion. Im actually surprised my car never ghosted at all. I have another video where an RSR attempted to out brake me and he went into the grass just slightly and his car went ghost and like 3 people went through him before he was whole again

edit: I should also explain that in both of these clips i rewinded and did a different view. The Porsche ghost can be best seen at the end of the clip when I do the behind the car view

In that first video when you didn't brake and came barreling across the track like a maniac causing the poor guy to slam into the rear of you was unacceptable.

You are apart of the problem.

Not my fault PD didn't ghost my car. How else am I supposed to get back on the track? Stop and use my blinker?

yeah for the same people that flash their lights when they're behind slower cars like anyone cares

It is a safety feature just like the indicators to warn someone you're coming up behind someone fast.

I'm not a fan of ghosting tbh. While it does sometimes save you from being collected when others make mistakes, that is part of racing.
It's so inconsistent as well. I've had people dissappear for very little and then others spin out in front of you and stay solid.

When you post a replay of you using your blinkers I will start using mine. Until then I'm not gonna act like you actually do use them

I agree. While it is nice to not get caught in the crash fest by driving through a bunch of ghosted dummies, it takes away from the realism that they try to achieve. I can see a place for it in the Lobby mode but Sport mode should be no ghost

Ghosting is terribly unrealistic, I despise it. Blah.
To answer your question, you re-enter the track when all is clear. If you lose a few positions waiting, you lose a few positions.

Yeah in multi class races. Which we don't have in GTsport. If you're using it in single class racing you're just being a prat and basically asking the guy in front to move over for you, which you have no right to do. Unless you are lapping them.

lets be realistic though, out of 100 players, how many do you think are going to wait for the all clear to re-enter the track? I mean we got dudes using Meganes and Scirrocos b/c they cant keep up, you think they're going to wait to re-enter when they're already slow enough?

I agree with what you said, but if PD is gonna be unrealistic and ghost people then I'll be the first to admit that I should have been ghosted from the time I left the track to the time I was safely back on the track

I find this talk of realism odd. If it was realistic, half the cars in most sport races would end up written off, upside down and the drivers on the way to hospital while the race was red flagged.

Ghosting just helps some of the more innocent bystanders carry on racing and not have their evening event ruined unnecessarily.

If we could send some of these Megane drivers into the wall and get them sent to the hospital (ie: they cant race for a day) I would be all for it

XXI's response is right. Whether you actually wait until it's safe to re-enter, that is your decision. We are all facing an issue with other drivers which is the attitude of "win at all costs." If your decision is based on what everyone else is doing (i.e. "nobody else is waiting to re-enter so I won't wait either"), you are adding to the problem. We all should have some respect for other drivers, including those who behave badly. We all deserve to be on the track, and not be wrecked by anyone else. And what happens when another driver knocks us down? We get back up, dust ourselves off, and carry on just like a good driver does.

Nobody should be get into an incident every single race. In clean races we should place reasonably well, with the occasional podium or win. This is good enough. In a certain sense I enjoy trying to come back after an incident, it gives me a decent gauge how fast I am against drivers at the back of the pack. Also I might get a chance to practice clean passing. I might just be looking for the silver lining here, but usually there is something positive to be learned by a wreck, such as what *not* to do, or what drivers to avoid :D A periodic review of the etiquette videos is in order for everyone playing this game.

If someone is going to push me around on a straight where I am clearly the faster car I'm not making any attempt to be respectful back to that person. I'm not going to intentionally wreck someone but I will not bother yielding while re-entering the track for them. I use the bumper cam so I have a rear view mirror and at the angle I came back on the track I couldn't see him, but I guarantee he could see me barreling across the dirt that he helped put me in.

I don't think rejoining the track on its own was necessarily careless and wrong, but the way in which it was done was. Instead of just jumping aggressively onto the track and into the racing line, it'd be more correct to put in a better effort to carefully re-enter and stay on the right side, off the racing line. It is a small piece of road there but it can still be done.
