In a rare victory for Microsoft, Sony Online Entertainment has announced today that they are now an independent developer, breaking away from parent company Sony. The move comes as investment company Columbus Nova bought out the company for an undisclosed sum.

With the move, SOE has renamed themselves Daybreak Game Company, and promise no service interruptions for any of the games currently out there.

I wouldn't necessarily call this a victory for Microsoft because Sony did make a profit from this sale as well.

............Ooooohh, a console fanboy flamebait thread!! Yes I'll have some o' that.
Seriously though, did Sony sell SOE because of massive red overflowing off their books for awhile? That would make sense somewhat, didn't a shareholder make some noise about splitting Sony up or something a couple years ago?

It's a victory because DC Universe Online could land on the console within a year, provided that the new/old company still has the rights to the license. Granted, not all the servers could play nice with each other...

Think of this like Minecraft in reverse. Microsoft bought those developers out just as the PS4 version of the game hit shelves. I don't think that the new bosses will continue to support that version.

EDIT: For the record, Sony is the only console allowed at my house at the present moment.

I didn't even think a lot of people still played DC Universe..

Hopefully the sell is good for the studio and for gamers.

SOE haven't been exactly setting the gaming world alight.
Would you like to rephrase that? Compared to The Old Republic and Star Trek Online, DC Universe Online is a lot better MMO. Now granted, that is all they have been doing these days, but if you do only one thing and make it right...

Yeah but it still isn't a huge loss, probably Sony chose selling over closing them.
