A quick question, I've currently got some Creative 2.1 speakers, running off the Motherboard (Asus P8Z77 if it makes any difference). Is it worth investing in a sound card (be it a cheap one, or expensive)?

It's an area I know nothing about.

Putting a soundcard will reduce CPU load by maybe 1%-3% tops.

Mainboard soundcards are more than enough for average gaming, movie and music.

Unless your using a high end speakers or headphones or doing any audio processing type work no need to get a soundcard.

The speakers are externally powered and are what 4ohm?
Motherboards can handle up to 32ohm IIRC

Unless you specifically want a big surround setup (which some MB cards support to an extent anyway) or you need ASIO then there's no point upgrading the soundcard. As @Grayfox says you're not exceeding the physical capacity of the current equipment.
