Land of the smelly onion
Not sure where this goes so I'll ask here. I did a search but came up with nothing.

I started playing GT4 again after about a year. During that time I hooked my PS2 up to a different tv.

Last night I was going through my garage and selecting random cars to make a few laps around a track to get familiar with them again.

I selected the RUF Yellowbird, and went to the nurburgring. I started the 1st lap and found something very odd. There is no engine sounds when driving from the roof cam or bumper cam, but there is engine sounds when driving in the chase view.

It seems to only apply to rear engine cars, (Yellowbird, '49 Beetle, etc.). Mid-engine and front engine cars, the sound is fine.

Anyone else have problems with no engine sound when driving RR cars? Other sounds are there (tire noise, wind) but no engine noise.

There's not "no" sound, but the sound is quieter, certainly. You've caught the reason for it - the loud bit is a long way behind you.

Famine, there actually is a "glitch" in the game, regarding the sound of rear-engined cars. You'll only hear the engine in all views if you have a surround system with actual rear speakers. Using a TV, you need to set the sound in the options to "mono".

I cranked up the sound effects and turned off the music and hear no engine sounds at all.

I remember there used to be muffled sounds when I played on my other tv.

I've had it in Stereo since I got the game and drive the Ruf RGT more often than any other car. Sometimes even in Nosecam and with a wheel.

I'm aware there's a difference - hence what I said in post #2. But there's not NO sound. Adamgp also remembers there being sound (albeit quieter, as I say) when he played it on his old TV.

So it seems the answer is that some TVs won't make any noises. Some will, but quieter, as intended.

If I remember correctly, the engine actually was inaudible when I tried this on my tv. It may well be that other tvs give you different experiences, however, you'll only experience the correct volumes when you set the option to mono.

That said, I generally have my audio routed out to a pair of monitor speakers or, at LANs, headphones.

I switched the sound setting to "mono" and the engine sounds work now in all views. Thanks.

I guess the "new" tv I'm using has a different sound system than the other one.

As you've driven a 911, and as I currently drive one in real life, I can certainly say, and I'm sure you'll agree that the loud bit, behind you or not, is more than loud enough to be heard very very clearly! Especially the older air-cooled flat-6 engines.
