Special Skylines Overrated?

I was thinking about how I used to be addicted to the Special Skylines. They were almost all I drove. But I realized I almost never drive them now, ignored in favor of Vipers and TVRs and Supras and such (although I did recently win 2 hrs Rome Circuit in one).

But anyway, what about you? Are Skylines part of your regular rotation or do they just collect dust in your garage?

And finally, which ones do you have?

Mine:
Penzoil
Arta
Kure
Unisia
Zexel
Calsonic
Mines R32
Mines R33
Mines R34

ummm... I think that's it.

Feh, they usually collect dust in my garage. I use the trusty Unisia Jecs GT-R here and there to see how my skills have changed over the years, but just for a race or two. It was my bread-and-butter for many races, but it was time for something new (like 550 other cars).

I could never understand why anyone whould buy the Pennzoil, but some swear it's the best GT-R in the game. No difference.

The Calsonic GT-R took me over 20 tries to win...I kept getting GT-Ones (normally nobody would complain about that!) when I was begging to get the final GT-R GT...it was just no big surprise.

The Arta looks mean, but since I was a Unisia fan, I got the same impression Dirk Diggler got from Rock Landers (anyone ever seen Boogie Nights?)...this guy's trying to replace me! It's a nice car, better brakes than the Unisia...but too much like the UJ.

The Zexel and Kure look good, not much more of a challenge, anyway. But after racing the Zexel on the rally tracks (with a GS, of course), it was quite the dirt racer.

The Mine's are a big disappointment; they are neat when you just start out winning races, but otherwise overweight, underpowered, and only permit slight tuning. And what's with the lousy torque figures? 618hp should be enough, but the car is just not hard-tuned GT-R material. Besides, I don't like that silly "Mine's" logo on my car.

Which brings us to the Nismo R33 LM. I suppose it brings back GT1 memories to some, but it takes a lot of tuning and patience. When it's all said and done, you've spent 800,000 credits for the Japanese equivalent of a fully-tuned Corvette. That said, it's been my project car lately...a good match for the AI.

All the R34's, Unisia, Calsonic, Pennziol, Arta, are ALL THE SAME. Set the suspensions and tranny's the same and they're the exact same car. Just different paint. I like to set'em up just a bit differently for differnet cources, set up hard for flat courses like Midfeild, or soft for courses like Deep Forest.

The Nismo R33 LM is just too heavy, and if memory serves me right, only has 5 gears....BAH!

The Mines cars are just Skylines with stiff suspensions.

The R33 GT/LM cars are Okay, and are just a bit slower than the R34 cars.

So is it better to buy an R34, and fully tune it...or use an GT-R like the Pennzoil?

I say it's a toss up, but the racers don't understeer as badly. However, the R34 makes for an unusual rally car (but still no match for the ~460hp pure rally cars, though).

Yeah, that R33LM has only 5 gears. That hampers it even further.

The racing versions of ALL cars (99% of the time) are much better than their normal counterparts. Go with the GT-R's.

I think they are mainly a newbie car- they're 4wd, have good brakes, and have good acceleration. User-friendly car, and they won't spin out on you. But yonce you can learn to drive rear-wheel drive cars, they are kinda sucky.

Skylines are overrated just because of their popularity. But think twice before you talk, it is still a hella lot of fun to drive them.

Yes, it's better to use the prize Skylines (or the Pennzoil).

The [R]Skyline R34 tuned to like 740-770hp (I forget what it tops out at) ****ing KICKS A$$ on 60ft times. That car it past everybody in barely 2-seconds. I don't think the Prize Cars launch as hard as the Race-Prepped street car.

Unisia
Silhouette R30 Foumula
Hard tuned 700+hp R34

Don't use them at all - just there for show cars mainly. I use the R30 for the Apricot Hill enduro.

The R30 Silhoutte is hardly overrated, though. It's a really sweet car in perforfance, if not looks. And it's FR, not 4WD.

And it's very easy to win!

I used to race Skylines regularly, and I have the Pennzoil. But now I use the RX7 LM. It offers a challenge in some races

you're right - it's unusually quick.
you're wrong - it's horrendously ugly.
it has room for a house under that huge rear end.

Easy to win - easy to sell. :D

This is the easiest way of making money in the beginning stages - in my opinion.

Once you have the dollars from the R30 sales, buy a fast car, get an IA (?) License, kick some arse in the GT All Starts, sell the Speed 12 and that's your new way of bringing in the dollars.

I've only recently discovered what a great car the R30SF is. I can do just as good, or better, than the 702HP, 4X4 Skylines with it.

But yeah, it sure is ugly.
