Before I post the rest of this topic, I want to congratulate Ben Roethlisberger of Miami University (Ohio) for an amazing performance in the GMAC Bowl earlier tonight.
Normally, I am a road racing fan. No matter how anyone looks at Speed Channel, think about this. Speed Channel actually has better coverage of road racing events than Speedvision. I think regardless of what anyone thinks, Speed Channel is still an all-motorsport channel.
What is the biggest disappointment? I'll describe. At around 8AM on Father's Day weekend, I try to get up to see the twice-around-the-clock classic, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. I catch some Le Mans coverage of qualifying, and then I am ready to check out some 24 Hour action. I know that even if I tried, I would not stay up all day or night watching a continuous race. So normally and naturally, I back away from the race and catch it later. I can recall when Speedvision (I got the channel in April 2001, so I'm a late bloomer to it) showed Le Mans for 24 Hours straight, same went for Petit Le Mans. Daytona was done until the night race, but I couldn't care less about the Daytona race. To me, the Daytona race only makes circle-track fans be reminded that the Daytona 500 is coming. Anyhow, the disappointment is that when Le Mans was going away, I seen all this NASCAR, and you know... nothing related to sportscars or Le Mans. I mean, I wanted to see Petit Le Mans, but instead, NASCAR trucks was "more important" than Petit Le Mans. It was almost as if NASCAR Trucks at Homestead was a pregnant woman ready to give birth than a sportscar race regarded as one of the best endurances in America. If I made a racing channel, I'd include stuff like "Motorvision," "Motorsport Mundial," JGTC Coverage (tape delay like MotoGP, or live like USAC at Indianaplois Raceway Park)," DTM Coverage, BTCC Coverage, British GT Coverage, V8 Supercar coverage, Asian F3... I mean, a station has to back up its credentials on racing coverage.
Part of why I like road racing in America and around the world is that you begin to learn more about the world of racing more than just what many of us are used to. Is Speed Channel covering? I'd say that the reason why racing coverage can't be shown WHILE THE SEASON(S) IS/ARE UNDERWAY is that most of the racing in America and those we know around the world may be reserved for when American racing is no more. I really think showing this kind of racing from around the world would increase others' knowledges about racing. When I learned about other racing series around the world, it increased my knowledge of racing and of other automobiles. You can teach a child what racing 4 turns at 175-200 mph is like, but when you can teach that child what a British, Japanese, German, Italian, or whatever kind of car at a challenging road course, you taught a child what racing is all about. Speed Channel is doing good with road racing, but can do better and leave NASCAR to a minimum. How does Speed regulate this? That's up to them. If they can reduce the circle track racing and shades of drag racing, and show the world of racing that is not just WRC, MotoGP, and F1, then Speed Channel may be the best EVER channel. I would love to see more racing from around the world. I would love racing in Japan and in Europe, and Australia, and the rest of Asia.
That is all. We can only dream of what we COULD be seeing. Is there an angel that can heed our call for more and better racing?
