I've been signed up on Simraceway for a while now, I just thought to log in to see what's changed as I haven't checked for ages and I saw the SRW-S1 wheel. In case you don't know, it's an F1-style wheel but it's literally just the wheel, there's no steering column or anything beyond the wheel. Actually I could just post a link, couldn't I? http://www.simraceway.com/srw-s1_steering_wheel?locale=en

So I saw it, and I got thinking about the possibilities of modding it to mount it on a FFB wheel base like a G27 or DFGT, maybe. I'm guessing someone will have thought of this before as it's quite obvious, so has anyone done it or seen it done somewhere? At $120 (£100 on Amazon) it's not cheap cheap, but not too expensive either.

I reckon if you had one of these, an SLI-M and a cheap-ish Logitech wheel, you could make something pretty decent that would work with any PC sim, not just Simraceway. Personally I think you'd have to be a bit mad to pay £100 for a controller for a game (or sim, maybe) that costs nothing, but at the same time a controller like this is a pretty good idea as it's the complete opposite to a sim cockpit yet gives you everything you need to race. You just wouldn't want to use it for extended periods and when you look at it closely you'll see that most of the buttons are for pointless fripperies like driving assists and steering sensitivity, which most people tend to touch once and then leave well alone.

Still, it's hard to find F1-style wheel rims that aren't ludicrously expensive, I just wonder what the quality of the finish is like.

Ah yes, YouTube. I have no idea why I didn't go there first...

I'm reading some reviews and I can't find any mention of the actual quality of the product itself, as in the materials, the feel of the buttons and such. I mean I already know it's not going to be carbon fibre or anything but I'd just like to know if it feels cheap and flimsy or relatively sturdy, really.

Some posts from the iRacing forums...

I got one yesterday and have taken it for a spin in iRacing. So far I'm very impressed with the level of control it offers from gyros. I should qualify why I bought it. I was heavily into sim racing in the late 90s-early 2000s and still have all my gear (BRD wheel, Speed7 pedals, Act Labs RS Shifter and BRD Race Frame). I have a family now so have no space to have the gear set up. I managed to get my pedals, wheel and shifter out for the first time in 8 years last weekend and had fun driving but realise if I want to race at all I can't use that rig. The SRW-S1 is perfect for me. It is small, portable and offers somewhat realistic controls (well better than a joystick). Hopefully I will be able to rekindle my sim racing with it.

Got one of these via Fedex yesterday.

Functions exactly as advertised - pretty darned amazing how it "steers" with nothing but the USB connection ! It does all that's advertised, and was easy to map all buttons & controls (except rotary switches & shift lights) to use in rFactor and iRacing.

I purchased because I had so much trouble getting my TSW to work w/ CARS. That problem is now solved, but CARS kinda sucks anyway (at least for now) so the SRW is just another piece of hardware that will likely sit in the closet (I'll sell for less than retail if anyone wants one) ..................................

As you all have already guessed it is NOT a substitute for any sim wheel or pedals.

Well made, good looking, but it's a "gimmick" that is best used if you want to sit in the recliner and run a few laps for "fun".

You're like my personal Google, Coxis! I found one review that mentioned that it feels pretty well made, but I'm not really interested in anything else seeing as if I had one I'd just gut it, wire the inputs and LEDs up to an SLI-M and mount it on a Logitech base. That said, actually, I don't always play racing games using my cockpit so I could probably use one of these. I had been thinking of how you could make your own F1-style wheel and the conclusion I came to was that there isn't really an easy way unless your standards are pretty low, but that was with absolutely no research.

I love discussing all things sim hardware-related. This and the iRacing subforums are pretty much the only places I post anymore, so yeah. Glad to be of help. :)

I'm planning on making my own F1 style rim based on this Finnish fellows design:
http://s121.photobucket.com/albums/o235/PahaMaku/F1 Steering wheel and Cockpit/

I'm considering carving the rim shape out of fiberglass foam, glassing in the wheel mount (similar to chilicokes adaptor plate) and some metal supports in an 'X' shape on the back, and hence fibreclassing the whole thing.

I'd wrap the handgrips in suede/alancantra. I'd make the faceplate out of aluminum or plastic or fiberglass and then cover with3M CF wrap (or maybe just buy a CF plate).

After mounting the buttons, I'd wire them to a USB PCB behind the faceplate. This would be connected to the PS3 (or pc down the line somewhere) via USB, and act as a secondary controller/button box. I would like to have the wheel attach via quick-connect a la F1, but haven't thought that part through yet.

Not the easiest project to pull off looking professional, but pretty straightforward nonetheless.

^^^ that is fantastic works on his part, but wouldn't it be easier to mod an off the shelf wheel? 95% of the hard work is done already.

It would be easier I'm sure, just to add one of the pre-fabbed plates or to make one of my own plates, but it wouldn't give me the shape of wheel or the look that I'm looking for. Plus the challenge is the fun part!:)

Reviving this thread to show how I hard mounted my SRW S1.

Is it possible to mount this wheel on the T500rs base? I play mostly on Pc.as i understand it, the only problem is how to mount it (need adapter of some kind) but the function of the buttons can be set in game options. And the game still recognize t500rs base.

If i was ever to mod my DFGT by getting this, how much would it cost to mod and how hard would it be to a beginner modder?

The SRW S1 is perfect for arcade games like 1nsane, FlatOut UC but not for serious games (sims).
I tried netkar Pro and Assetto Corsa (Tech preview) with this wheel and because it is only max 360°, it is too sensitive.

If you want to use an SRW S1 for sim racing, don't. Get another multi turn wheel.

you have been warned! LOL

Actually, pablo lopez from radicals racing run this wheel with an adapter from simulaje on his g27 in a world champion series in iRacing.

Depends on how u use the wheel, by it self maybe not, but mounted on a proper base, definitely.

I have been trying to find how to use a SRW-S1 mounted to a T500RS. Seen the picture above, but that doesn't really tell me much. Anyone did it (without PVC tubes maybe? :-))

Do you meen it mounted as a button box or mounted as a wheel? I wouldn´t want it mounted to the wheel it´s not sturdy enough and to small of a diameter. But it´s perfect as a button box on my T500RS :)

All the previous posts seem to refer to a G25/G27 base, not a T500RS base, so I'm not sure. However, I found a new SRW-S1 for about 20 euros, so I thought I'd give it a shot anyway :-)

Button-box idea seems interesting, do you have any pics?

Cool! That's beyond my modding capabilities, so how did you do that? :-)

And, how do you attach a custom rim to a t500?

You don´t need any modding capabilities whatsoever. You use a screwdriver or what it´s called in english to remove the handles and paddles and then you just use some strips, or whatever to attach the button box to the rim from the tunnels of the paddles. It´s like made for the purpose.

I use an adapter from derekspearedesigns. A bit expensive more so then the SRW S1 actually but not to bad. The total price with my aftermarket rim was hardly more then the stock T500RS wheel anyway so :)

I think if one of our genius parts guys could come up with a SRW-S1 to T500 adaptor, they'd probably make a few sales. I know I have a NIB one waiting for the right project.
