Stanley Steam Car 1906
Steam cars could out-accelerate gasoline-powered cars. In 1906, on the beach at Daytona, a specially equipped Stanley was clocked at an incredible 205km/h . Top speed in a steamer seemed to be limited only by the bravery, or foolhardiness of the driver.
In 1908, the Stanley brothers produced and sold (for about $2,500) a Gentleman's 30 BHP Speedy Roadster capable of 97 km/h that could run more than 80 km on a single tank of water. Since these almost 3.8 metre long models were the sporty/racing cars of 1908, most were driven into the ground.
When they later shifted the steam boiler to the front of the vehicle, the resulting feature was called by owners the "coffin nose." In order to improve range. A Stanley Steamer set the world record for the fastest mile in an automobile (28.2 seconds) in 1906. This record was not broken by any automobile until 1911.
