The Next Gran Turismo, Steam Challenge:

STEAM CAR TRANSMISSIONS
  • This would be a challenge because although steam cars are similar they really aren't. Almost all steam cars have 1 Gear like an electric car but Generate a huge number of torques.
  • Although White Steam cars have a 2 Speed transmission, Whites are the only production steam cars to have more than 1 Gear
IN GAME CHANGES
  • Steam cars don't operate on a rev gauge as such because all the system is doing is heating water although constantly adjusting the throttle to control steam to allow enough steam pressure for movement.
  • So instead of including a rev gauge on Gran Turismo it would be better to have a steam pressure gauge.
  • Water and fuel gauges required
STEAM CAR THROTTLE CONSERVATION
  • Holding the throttle right open will allow a huge increase in speed, but a huge loss in steam pressure so if you don't coast or release throttle you won't have enough pressure for movement once you accelerate out of the next corner as you used all pressure on the straight (Unless the boilers big enough to maintain more steam pressure Than It's Using)
STEAM CAR LIMITATIONS
  • Steam cars require Fuel & Water to run so pit stops maybe required due to the short ranges
  • Range of steam cars varies hugely depending on multiple factors like - if a steam car has a greater boiler size it can generate more steam pressure faster
  • The Weight of a steam car can Hugely affect it's range
  • Fuel and water tank size can also contribute to the range a vehicle may have.
  • Temperature of environment, if its a hot summers day a steam car will use more water, Cooler temperatures will supply the cars with greater operating conditions more range.
STEAM CAR ATTRIBUTES
  • New Range, New Innovation for Gran Turismo
  • Steam engine has instant torque like an electric car
  • New driving Challenge (Controlling throttle to increase range of car)
  • Great Variety of cars
  • Gran Turismo has an awesome smoke system (Look Great Pluming out the back of the cars)
  • Adds some great historical cars to the game (Lacking Cars before the year 1950)
Examples of Some Steam cars and their range:

Range: 110 - 485 kms - Doble E-20 Special, 1925
Range: 48 - 108 kms - Ford Falcon (XL) Steam Car, 1963
Range: 50 - 80 kms - Stanley 20HP, 1922
Range: 48 - 193 kms - Stanley 30HP, 1906
Range: 50 - 485 kms - White 20HP, 1907
Range: 64 - 242 kms - White 30HP, 1907
Range: 24 - 161 kms - White Model 0-0, 1910

...........Steam cars?? One or two maybe, but whole grid full? No thanks. There's a reason why this type of propulsion didn't gain..."traction".

Example of some steam cars and their Top Speed:

243 km/h (150.9 mph) = Fastest Kettle in the World, 2009
213 km/h (132.5 mph) = Doble E-20 Steam Special, 1925
161 km/h+ (100 mph+) = Doble E-18 Steam Car, 1925
113 km/h+ (70.0 mph+) = Stanley Vanderbilt Cup Racer, 1906
113 km/h+ (70.0 mph+) = Ford Falcon (XL) Steam Car, 1963
97 km/h+ (60.0 mph+) = White 40HP Steam Car, 1907
81 km/h+ (50.0 mph+) = White 20HP Steam Car, 1907
72 km/h+ (45.0 mph+) = Stanley 20HP Steamer, 1922

What do you mean the steam engine didn't gain traction?

The first steam engine was patented in 1606 and reined supreme until the last comercial production car of 1925 but steam is still used today in most powereplants, steam was supreme for a total of 319 years. Where as Petrol combustion engines wasn't patented until 1876 where it has reined dominant since.

Steam - 1606 to 1925 = 319 years
Petrol - 1876 to 2015 = 139 years
