Steering Assist Question???

I keep reading and hearing that people are using the steering assist with both gamepads and wheels. I'm no fan of this type of assist, but so many are speaking highly about it.

How heavy is this assist? Are YOU doing most of the steering or is this assist doing the work? It's just that the steering in this title is pretty jacked up, and I am fed up with the steering issues. Will I feel like I'm actually racing with this assist, or will it be obvious that it is being applied?

Not obvious unless going very slow. If you are fed up with the steering issues turn it on - what can it hurt.

I tried it when I started the game with a contoller. With a DS3 it felt like it was doing most of the steering for you. Was hard to go where "you" wanted if it wasnt on the line.

With a wheel, it is more subtle, but still there. I dont like it because I feel out of control a bit. The only good thing I can say about it is it makes the GT40 mkI drive a bit better.

See that's my concern. I don't like the idea of an assist taking so much control that you find yourself at times fighting to counter-steer the assist to put the car where you want it.

There is already a very annoying assist that cannot be adjusted that makes minute steering adjustments when you're holding the wheel steady in a turn. Some seem to think it's a "visual effect".., but it's very obvious the vehicle is affected by this. I've found that sometime steering issues when cornering are a direct result of this poorly implemented assist.

I find the game unplayable without the steering assist on my Xbox wheel.

Maybe I have the wheel set up wrong (it's on defaults).

Anyone got any suggestions for settings ?

With steering assist on it feels perfectly natural to me, and does what I expect of it.

If it works for you, then dont change it :)

I heard the game is running better on the Xbox, but I just dont remember seeing much diff.

I want to try S2 on the Xbox again, but I just couldnt get into it with dang MS Wheel.

I recently got an Xbox and MS wheel. I hate the wheel! I am trying to sell my MS and DFGT and purchase a Fanatec.

Thanks for the advice. :)

I guess I'll stick with the wheel as is for the moment then, but I have got something like a G25 or G27 on my wishlist.

I figured that if I was able to keep up with most of the guys online, (and usually podium), then my set-up can't be far out.

The tuning forum on here has been really helpful too.

Some people love the MS wheel. Its all personal taste. But if I am not mistaken, the G25/27 cannot be used with the Xbox. So wheels are so damn limited for that console.

If I stick with Xbox console then, is a Fanatec the one you'd suggest ?

I need something beefy because I keep having to fix the (weedy) paddles on the MS wheel.

Also with being a Brit, a left-hand gearstick is a MUST. :)

Well from I understand there isnt much of a choice. People have raved about the Fanatec wheels. But you get the wheel, then have to buy the pedals, then have to buy the shifter. And you can place it on the right side or the left (wrong SIDE!) :).

I have only owned a DFGT and MS, so cannot comment on anything else.

I find it undriveable WITH the steering assist turned on actually! Whether I am using my DFP or the DS3.

Actually I did find it almost unplayable with the DS3 at first with or without steering assist but 8 weeks ago I injured my back & have been unable to play using my wheel as the sitting position is agony.

This forced me to start using the DS3, which is a real challenge in this game. I have been forced to set the AI to medium (elite handling) but this means that if I concentrate hard, know the circuit well and the luck of the race goes my way I can sometimes win. This feels about right and as it should be and makes a win feel very special :)
