SALT LAKE CITY - A Manti man has a penny for Sanpete County's thoughts. About 8,200 of them, actually.

Grant Petersen withdrew that many copper coins from his bank and delivered them in a bucket to pay an $82 fine he got for driving with a burnt-out headlight.

Court officials are apparently not amused, and have asked Petersen to come back in and offer a more "acceptable" form of payment. They say state policy allows clerks to reject unusual forms of payment, and it's going to waste county resources for someone to count all that change.

Petersen says he doesn't plan on honoring that request. He says money is money, and U.S. law provides that coins are legal tender.

I dunno about the US, but in the UK, 1pence & 2pence pieces are only legal tender up to 20pence. It's up to the person receiving the money as to whether they want to accept it as payment or not.

So if that happened here, the court would be perfectly entitled, and the law is on their side, to not accept that as payment.

In Australia there's no such thing as 1 and 2 cent pieces anymore, lowest legal tender is 5c. I think 1 and 2 cent pieces stopped being circulated around '92 or something. I'm not quite sure.

It all depends what you are buying....I find that clerks are pretty forgiving about buying a pack of cigarettes with small change  As long as the store is not very busy, that is.

I love digging through my pockets for small change, holding up the rest of the customers. :sly:

Hell knows, they do it to me enough times!?

The US should get rid of pennies. The only time they matter is when you are buying a big quantity of something small.

That's what I thought.

How do you buy penny sweets if there are no pennies?
Loads of things in teh UK are piced £*.99. Without the penny we would all pay loads extra (in the long term).

The government has to keep pennies in circulation because thats the easiest way to collect our DNA. Think of how many people handle pennies each day, tons of fingerprints and skin cells that the gov't needs.

Thats why I dont carry change!
