I've been playing GT for YEARS (bla bla bla...), but there's one thing that I cannot really explain lately, some cars with the customizable ratios will change ratio when you select "default", even if you've never touched it before.

The speed will not change but the numbers (gears) will slightly change though.

What would explain that ? Is it because the default gear ratio is modified when installing a custom one ? Because I realized that a 6 speed gear ratio is the same on a custom one (positively sure), of course, 5 speed is not close to being the same ratio as the custom one.

Some one else reported this a few weeks ago. I haven't noticed it but frankly I'm amazed it happens.

My guess is that when we install the custom trans, it keeps the ratios of the original trans and only moves the final gear to get a quicker acceleration (thus lower top speed).

Or it might be the trans ratios stay at the old PP setting (since when installing the custom trans we also add engine upgrades or at the very least and oil change) and there might be a glitch that's causing the ratios to stick to the old PP and not refresh to the new PP.

It has to do with engine tuning and max rpm.

Any gearbox you install will give you a set top speed.
If your car has engine tuning (raised rev limit) any gearbox you install will recognize it and adjust the gear ratios accordingly to give you the set top speed for that car.

If you try the following you will see for yourself:
Buy two identical NCD cars.
Tune one like this: Install close ratio gearbox - tune engine to the max.
Tune the other like this: tune the engine to the max - install close ratio gearbox.

Now you will see that installing the gearbox first gives you extra top speed.

After this, take car 1 with highest top speed, re-install the tranny and voila: same top speed as car 2.

So, if you install the gearbox before tuning the engine it will give you ratios for stock rpm.
When you tune the engine it keeps these ratios untill you reinstall the gearbox, or like the OP, reset a FC tranny to default.

It has been this way since GT2 iirc.

If you are talking about a 5 speed Close-Ratio compared to a 6 speed Close-Ratio and a Fully Customizable Race Transmission then the 5 speed ratio is different to the 6 speed and the race transmission because you have less gears to shift into and as a result you need to make the gears longer to avoid hitting the redline.

What I meant was,

If you keep the stock transmission (usually 6 speed), the ratio is of course, already set to what the car should have in real life probably. If you buy a custom transmission (6 speed), the ratio stays the same, but if you select "default" (with the custom "tranny" installed), the gear ratio will change.

Try it, you'll see what I mean. Still, I don't know if the default (setting) one is better than the stock-non default-custom transmission.

Whew !

Vegard gave you the answer. When you install an FC transmission, the game calculates optimum settings for top speed at the current level of tune. By hitting the default button you are forcing the transmission to reset to settings that don't consider the level of engine performance.

It was a reply to MSTER232.
