Strange acceleration problem

I've just set up the PS2 again after getting a new TV and entertainment unit and I've discovered a strange problem that certainly wasn't evident before. I jumped straight in without modifying any of my previous settings (which are more or less default anyway) and noticed that my acceleration frequently gets 'stuck' for want of a better word.

This normally happens when I come out of a corner, my car just won't accelerate until I release the X button and press it again, then it takes off like it should. I've rebooted the machine but the problem still occurs.

I just tested the Arcade mode with a similarly powered car and it does exactly the same thing: refuses to accelerate until you let go and press X again.

Any help would be very greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
D.

I have to ask the obvious question - have you tried using a different DS2 controller? This is not a situation I've heard on the software side of things.

i never heard of any problems like that...but is it maybe ur controller X button which is stuck or mal functioning sometimes?

I'd look at the controler and check if the contacts are clean where it plugs into the playstation. I've had recurring problems with my MC2 wheel not being able to get full throttle. I finally took it apart last night and discovered the throttle rheostat had worked itself loose. I tighened it up and put it back together with success. I was playing Paris/Dakar last week and I'm sure that was holding me up. Of course, I wasn't landing on my roof as much either:dopey:

Yeah my vote would be your dualshock is going bad. :( There might be a way to fix it but personally I would try a different controller or just buy a new one. In my gaming experience, it's rare that a controller will last 6 months! I tend to thrash them up.

And I hate to say it but (so far) I've found Sony has the best. I tried Mad Katz...which has bigger grips, but the analog sticks began to feel vague within a week :ouch: so I just stick with Sony.

Has anyone tried one of those controllers that features air-cooled ducts? Always been curious of them but I'm afraid it'll suck.

Yes, a different controller remedied the problem immediately. I hadn't considered it because they are only a week old and I've probably spent only 10 hours playing GT3. We have warranties on all the equipment so I'll take it back if problems persist. They are both Sony controllers too; not cheap knock-offs.

It must have been working correctly when I plugged it into the second slot though, because my wife absolutely thrashed me on Smokey Mountain later that evening by 11 seconds in a short 5 lap race.

I'm now guessing that it must be something to do with the L2 and R2 buttons, because my wife uses automatic gears and she doesn't have a problem with it at all. I use manual and it just keeps hitting 'walls' in the acceleration.

...new controller yet?

I picked up the replacement controller today, though I haven't tested it. I've been too busy with another problem, soon to make a thread on that in a last ditch desperation effort to solve it.

Hey..I think I just figured out what you meant by the "hitting walls in acceleration" comment! At first I thought you mean you were literally unable to control the steering and hitting walls, but now I gather it's a problem with manual shifting.

You may already know this, but when you're using a manual, the engine will keep revving into the redline area till it hits a speed limiter. In real-life, limiters are used so you don't blow up your engine, but in the game, it's just a way to set a limit on power delivery.

So (if I'm right) you just need to learn when to shift. Many cars can be launched in 2nd or even 3rd gear to keep their engines from instantly bopping into the redline area. If you're still having problems with this, you just need to reign back the gas when you're accelerating. 💡

Nah mate, it was definitely a problem with the controller. By 'walls' I meant that there would be a point where the car just stopped going faster even though it may only be in 3rd gear and revving at around 3,000 or 4,000. Well short of redlining. So I was just cruising around the oval speedway in the Sunday Cup. By momentarily releasing the X button, the car would accelerate properly for a while. But it was irritating to have to keep releasing the X button all the time to make sure I was accelerating properly.

Here's what you do: take a BFH (Big F---ing Hammer) and crush that controller! Make sure to have your new one blessed by a priest or shaman or whatever. ha ha joking

As therapeutic as crushing things can be, I generally relieve tension my own way: visiting random videos on Youtube and leaving comments along the lines of "Man that video is so fake." to wind people up. It's the little things that can have the most effect.

Cheers,
 And then you get made a moderator at some forum, and 'stress relief' reaches a whole new level...

I relieve tension partially thru racing! 👍 There's nothing like skooling some arrogant AI bastahds, know what I mean?
