Despite a slow start to the season, Subaru's first time in the BTCC is slowly improving, with the Subaru Levorg of Colin Turkington quickly catching the leading Honda's. Currently Colin is 7th in the drivers championship, 37 points behind leader Sam Tordoff, while Subaru are 3rd in the Constructors and Team BMR are 4th in the Teams.
The car chosen to represent Subaru is the Levorg GT, the second estate car to race in the BTCC, with the first being the 1994 Volvo 850R. The BTCC version is powered by a 2.0 Turbo I4, similar to the one used in the production Levorg GT, and is converted to RWD as per NGTC regulations.
The Levorg has been criticised by Honda driver Matt Neal as being "the death of these [NGTC] regulations because whatever they do, they can’t slow it enough. It’s too good around the corners because of what they’ve allowed. It will be unstoppable, or we’ve all got to spend £100k on our cars and try and do the same. That car is Frankenstein. I have nothing against the team, fair play to them, but it’s just like the Audi [A4] with four-wheel drive, it’s like the Alfa [155] with the wings and the diffs. It’s the thin end of the wedge.”
