Hey all.

Just thought I'd share my thoughts on my SuperMegaUltimateUrberPwnage Gaming Rig that I'm planning to build sometime next year (if there is better hardware bought out in that time, I'll upgrade, but this is just using the parts that are available at this present time). This is essentially using the biggest, meanest, and best products on the market.

All prices are USD, even though I'm in Australia. When I purchase these parts, I'll be in America, sooooo there's that.

Intel Core i7-990X Extreme Edition Gulftown 3.46GHz LGA 1366 130W Six-Core Desktop Processor - $999.99

CORSAIR DOMINATOR GT 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Desktop Memory with Air Fan - $259.99

GIGABYTE G1.Assassin LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 XL ATX Intel Motherboard - $379.99

Cooler Master HAF X RC-942-KKN1 Black Steel/ Plastic ATX Full Tower Computer Case - $189.99

I've got school work to do now, but I'll update this post after I'm finished. Remember, money is not an issue here. I want to compile the biggest, meanest, and best gaming rig that is possibly known to man. 👍

 Yeah. A lot of those parts are actually what I was already looking at (motherboard, RAM, CPU). I am also debating what to do with my GPUs.

I've already decided to use the G1. Assasin Motherboard, which allows dual 16x graphics setups. I was thinking about quad GPU's (2 6990's in CrossfireX or 2 GTX 590s in SLI), however after watching a few reviews, the drivers for both brands of cards needs quite a bit of work (which may be there by the time I buy this system). Also in terms of quad or dual GPU's, I'd like to try to get all my GPU's with TwinFrozor2 coolers on them (which currently dosn't support the 6990)

Also, I'm curious as to what is so special about that case. It looks bland, boring and...yeah, especially that it costs $650, for something that dosn't look really nice in my opinon...

Or, if I could get my greasy hands on one, an ASUS Mars II, the fastest single graphics card known to man (or even two! :D)

Hmmm. Most of those cards(except the 4000 dollar one) look quite cheap and flimsy, with old hardware...

Why would you get the 990X? I know that there isn't a price limit.. but you MUST have value for money, right? I'm pretty sure even an i7 2600 can beat it in gaming. The only use for it that I can think of for it is for an Engineering firm, when they want to run model calculations (I ran 4 calculations on my 2500K for my dad in 24 hours... while my dad's Q8200 would have taken 57 hours..) How does the E-3960X sound?

Regarding workstation graphics, they aren't the best way to go. They are made for office use, when you are doing engineering models in Autocad, 3D modeling, and other models.

I'm looking now at the upcoming LGA 2011 Socket (R) that are supposed to be coming out. I've seen a few that have 8 DIMM slots (4 on either side) So that would allow quad channel?

That way I would have the option for 16GB of ram (4x4GB). I don't like loading the board up with 4, 6, or 8 DIMMS on single slot sets, so having the two sets would allow me to have the 4 without loading the board up (I'd like to overclock my memory just slightly)

Yes. I would say that would be the way to go.

Well... I always assumed that those processors would be dang expensive! No free shipping on the processors... They usually give you free shipping for processors. I also noticed that the default heatsink/fan unit is not included. I'd rather grab an i7-2600K instead of those processors but the 2011 chips fall into a more extreme small niche due to their price.

Don't waste your money on 590s or 6990s. If you want the best, ultimate gaming rig, quad 3 gig 580s are the best there is. The 590s really are not that great, 2 580s are better then a 590. Plus there will be newer cards out next year. The 990 you have listed is also 3 generations old and has no place in a gaming rig. If your wanting to fold with it, the 990 would be great, but for gaming their really is no point at all. A 2600k would be better for gaming, Plus if I remember right, the 990 has hyper threading anyway, for most games you will need to turn it off to get better performance. Most of my games run better with HT off.

Tom's Hardware has a review out on the 3960x. I suggest taking a look at it, though next year is still a long way away in the technology world. IIRC, AMD will be releasing their new graphics cards in the first quarter.
