Hi all. I just saw the last episode of InsideSimRacing and took note of the Fanatec special offers (CSR Wheel + Pedals for €300) so I've been thinking of selling my G25 and getting that. The G25 is a great wheel but I want a wheel that will work on X360 with Forza 4 and that is something that the CSR has and the G25 doesn't but I also care to be able to play GT5 properly and that is why I made this post. Does the CSR wheel work well with GT5? Or do people have problems getting things working? (shifter not recognised, wheel doesn't respond properly ingame etc.)

I've had no issues to date, with my CSR, Elite pedals and shifter set with GT5. But, in saying that, I'm more relegated to FM4 right now so, I don't have extensive testing with GT5.

I play exclusively gt5 with my gt2 wheel/csp set. I have had zero issues with the wheel and game together.

I know its not the csr, but essentially the same electronically.

Keep your G25 for a rainy day.
You wont get that much for it anyways and just wait a little longer if you need to for the Fanatec.

Without trying to get folk's Dander up over any brand, it must be noted that there have been problems associated with the new Fanatec gear and you can read about it as quoted below.

Hi all, new here but figure I need to get my voice heard somewhere, since obviously Fanatec support doesn't hear it or respond to it. You'd think they would at least answer 1 email after I dropped 500 bucks on a top flight sim setup from their webshop.... :indiff:

Anyway... I picked up the CSR, CSR elite pedals, and CSR shifter set a couple weeks back (to add to my Bob Earl Racing Seat v1), and the wheel specifically has been nothing but trouble from day 1.

The wheel emits high pitched electronic whine (similar to coil whine on GPUs) most of the time (possibly all the time, I don't know because I wear headphones) and this is in PC mode, not XBOX mode (the mode everyone seems to claim is the cause of this problem). It also makes this mid-range mechanical/electronic noise that I can't describe, loudest when first turned on but still audible at any point afterwards.

It also has the firmware problem of not saving profile settings after power off. Coupled with the below problem of losing FFB and needing a reboot, I've found myself re-inputting all of my wheel settings a dozen times per day.

The wheel shakes/vibrates at very low levels at all times (every couple seconds) even when in windows (!).

The wheel frequently loses center and locks onto false centers, and repeatedly loses FFB completely (including centering) in the middle of play, needing to be power cycled to regain it (and of course when it does that it loses my saved settings too, and I have to restart the game and drop out of online play!) This happens every hour or even more frequently, and makes completing races or playing online absolutely impossible.

Lets get off the wheel for a minute and discuss the hideous ergonomics of physically adjusting the CSR Elite pedals -- an hour long job of monumental frustration (what the heck were they thinking when they designed the bolting system used for left-right pedal adjustment?) followed by another hour of trial and error adjustments because you can't physically tell how it will work until you sit down and test it. Oh, and Fanatec could have mentioned in the manual that the lowest placement possible for throw ("longest" throw, as I understand it) doesn't work for clutch or brake because clutch clips on something at around 90% depression and brake only gives you around 60% range due to the load cell not being able to reach due to the long throw. These are stupid design decisions you shouldn't see in such a pricey product... :indiff:

With all of these wheel problems I haven't bothered to touch or even open the box of the shifter yet. No idea what I will find when I do. :nervous:

At least the pedals are sturdy, very well designed overall, and mostly made of high quality materials, more than I can say for that cheap plastic rubbish Fanatec calls a premium racing wheel. And I say mostly because I noticed the geartooth input feeders for the pedals are made out of the cheapest plastic you could imagine. An odd choice considering where they are, what they are, and how important they are. It would have cost what, 25 cents to make them out of aluminum? All those high quality aluminum components and then you see that.

The wheel is pretty much the opposite though, with extremely cheap plastic everywhere and a couple of alcantara and metal bits thrown in to distract from how poorly constructed the wheel actually is, and to justify the ridiculous price. I doubt the CSR will last for even 6 months of daily simming, and since I won't be able to afford a replacement this year, that makes me extremely sad, as I am heavily addicted to rFactor (the reason I bought this rubbish in the first place). The pedals, even with the problems, were worth 150 bucks because they're solid, well built, very functional, and generally high quality. But no way in the world is that cheap plastic glitchpile of a wheel worth 250. NO WAY.

I've encountered all of these issues (and more I haven't mentioned) repeatedly in the 2 weeks I've been a Fanatec owner and, needless to say, I am not at all impressed. I go online and find no updated firmware, no response to support emails, and nobody with any answers.

Did I just waste 500 bucks? I'm seriously bummed here. :ouch:

PS: When everything works properly, I enjoy this setup a great deal. It just doesn't work properly for any reasonable period of time. The 250 dollar plastic steering wheel seriously bummed me out (as a 10-2 position driver), so I hand-wrapped the top plastic part of the wheel with gel grip tape. A great improvement, but it was stupid that I had to spend 10 more dollars to cover up those ugly plastic seams (and that one nasty sharp plastic seam joint on the left side that kept cutting my hand). Pretty much typical of my Fanatec experience so far though... so.... yeah.... sorry this was long, but I'm frustrated to my absolute limit.

You never know. When I got my 911 Turbo S I sold my G25 last year locally here in Toronto Canada. When I purchased my G25 new I scored a good deal on it via a sale at a local PC store for $225 CDN plus TAX. At that time the local big box stores like BestBuy sold the G25 set for $340+ CDN. When I went to sell my G25 the G27 was already out at the time but nobody local had stock and they were hard to find....let alone the price was over $350 CDN everywhere. I sold my G25 for $220 cash after listing it for one day on Kijiji.

As to the OP's question....yes....the CSR works very well with GT5. I've got lots of driving time with it and I love it.

I'm on GT5 on a daily basis and the wheel is fantastic on GT5, as for using it on FM4 I would wait for the wheel issues (900 deg) to be fixed first. I'm not mocking FM4 in any way as I have been a fan of the series for a long time but wheel support on GT5 is far superior to FM4, (my opinion of course) there is still no feel for the road on FM4 using the wheel as it still feels like you are driving on ice.

I am also not the only person to mention that there is a sensitivity issue on FM4 where the force feedback in the center of the wheel feels like it's asleep so to speak, in high powered cars this makes the wheel very twitchy.

Not trying to put you off as I still love the forza series but even FM3 supports the wheel a hell of a lot better, it's just not realistic on FM4 in my opinion. Maybe this will be fixed in the patch, I hope so along with the bugged cars on the leaderboards then it will be a fantastic game.

Fantastic wheel though, best I have experienced:tup:

Do you use your G25 shifter? Do note that the CSR combo doesn't include a shifter of any sort, other than the paddles on the wheel. You're going to need to spend another $30 or $60 US to get a shifter set.

As has been noted, right now there's a fairly serious flaw with wheels in Forza 4. Unless you're willing to drive with the steering set to 270 degrees and are a sloppy driver, it's close to game-breaking. I've shelved my copy (and am actually considering returning it since there's been no word from Turn 10 that they're making any effort to fix this.) for now, which is disappointing since it's got some strong points that make it easily the equal of GT5.

Turn10 have finally announced an upcoming 900 degrees wheel fix in the patch due in a few weeks: http://forzamotorsport.net/en-us/wir_11-18/

In terms of Fanatec quality control and support: A couple of years ago they had a reputation for quite poor quality control, so purchasing a Fanatec wheel meant accepting a risk for something to go wrong at some point. This was when they first moving manufacturing to China, and they had some early problems. They are definitely improving, and there are almost no stories of CSR wheel construction problems on the web, just the bugs in software which are soon to be fixed.

Just as Fanatec is a tiny company serving a niche market, their support organization is equally small, and it's important to remember this. You will be helped if something is wrong, definitely, but it could be a slow experience. In my case my GT2 wheel needed a new sensor chip: I videoed the behaviour, emailed this to support, and it took a couple of weeks before everything was sorted. Of course, that was during the summer when demand for Fanatec wheels was lower. Right now, with the tens of thousands of new CSR wheel owners, I expect Fanatec support is very busy. That's just something you have to accept: A small company with a small support organization offering a niche product means accepting this kind of thing.
