Sony really can't keep their E3 reveal secrets can they! ;)

CVG
According to numerous online forum posts, someone at Sony with an itchy trigger finger prematurely revealed Syphon Filter 4 on the official US PlayStation website, before quickly pulling the post.

Fortunately, vigilant gamers managed to jot down a few details before the information was withdrawn.

The post stated the upcoming PS3 title will be a sequel to Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, which was released for the PSP in 2007. The new game's set to be released in Q4 2012.

It'll use a brand new engine developed at Sony Computer Entertainment London to "revolutionise" the stealth gameplay. That's all we know for now, but expect to hear a lot more during E3 next week.

I guess this was one of Sony's big reveals for E3 like Twisted Metal last time. It good to see studio London working on something more meaty than Eye Pet and Singstar and this might bode well for the Getaway 3 seeing the light of day.

Thoughts?

Robin.

There going to revolutionise stealth gameplay.

Info gets leaked.
Ironic that somehow.

Wow, Shame that the series could not remain a PSP series. The first 2 games were 2 of the best handheld shooters I've ever played. I feel Syphon Filter could have been the Flagship title for the handheld. Q4 2012 is a gamble....... If the next system is to be released soon after.

All things considered, God of War II was released in 2007, about a year after the PS3 was launched. I didn't hear anyone complain about that.

This is Syphon Filter we are talking about........ Does not have the Modern gaming pedigree of a God Of War 2...

So they shouldn't release the game at all? And not for nothing, we don't know if there's a new console coming in 2013. Or even in 2014. I'm not one to buy into the whole gamer line of thinking "oh it's coming, how do I know? It just is". God of War was released in 2005, approximately one year before the PS3 was launched. There was no "pedigree" to speak of back then, and yet nobody complained about it being too late in the PS2's life cycle.

Why is there this thinking that if the PS4 is released, that suddenly everyone is supposed to just walk away from their PS3? You don't have to forsake one for the other. It also certainly doesn't mean you can't enjoy this, or any other game for that matter, that is released during that time period.

I played the original two Syphon Filter games on PS1, and they were far from perfect. The character animation was clunky, controls were so-so, and the cutscenes were pre-rendered using basically in-game assets with B-movie voiceovers.

But the games were SO MUCH FUN. I remember you could shoot enemies in the leg or arm and have them stumble, then shock them until they caught fire with a taser. Hell yes. The mission design was fun, and the whole first game felt like a competent spy thriller, sans the random silliness and operatic fluff that Metal Gear Solid wrapped itself in.

Looking forward to see how the new game looks, as I am nostalgia-ing pretty hard.

You know they first came out on PSone?? As stated here ^

What is up with the Stealth. SF was never stealth!!

also i fondly remember the first one which I loved. I hope the über taser comes back. had so much fun with that one. Worked like a charm on armored soldier too ;)

You are looking into this way too deep, take two deep breaths. I never said it or any game should not be released soon or after the next system. Wait, you said God of War II..... Are you doing this for the sake of starting an argument or something. With that You win, end of debate.

You know I said modern gaming right? And the PS2 version was a dud, It wasn't very good. The series could have been a great PSP brand is all I'm saying.

Still waiting for the Return of Colony Wars......

They were fun. Omega Strain didn't do the series justice. Just imagine what they could do with the PS3's hardware. The possibilities are endless!

I think Omega Strain was the best one. It didn't sell very well because the one before was the big stinker.

So long I have a demo to play, I'll give it a shot.

I have the first 3 for the original PS and the first one for PS2. They were lots of fun and I'm rather surprised that they're making a new one, I thought they had finally faded away.

Here's to hoping they will be awesome games, like the PS ones.

That is awesome news. I loved playing this as a kid. There was stealth, but it sucked. I liked that it wasn't so stealthy, though because it differentiated it from MGS. I don't know how I will like it if it's still 3rd person. With all the new FPS games going on, there is some enormous competition.

So this is pretty solid now, probably a reveal at TGS.

Syphon Filter 4 for Christmas 2012 says official mag

According to the Italian Official PlayStation Magazine stealth adventure Syphon Filter 4 will be out next winter for PlayStation 3, although Sony has yet to confirm the game even exists.

Evidence of a new Syphon Filter game has emerged before, when mention of Syphon Filter 4 appeared on the official US PlayStation website just before E3 - and then quickly and suspiciously disappeared.

The description at the time said the game was for the PlayStation 3 and was a direct sequel to 2007's Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow on the PSP - at the moment the last mainline game in the series to be released.

There are no new details on the game from the Italian mag, or at least none that we understand, but like the Sony website leak it also suggests a winter 2012 release date.

There's no indication of who the developer is, just that the game engine is being created by Sony in London. The most recent entries in the series have been handled by Sony Bend, but they're currently busy with Uncharted: Golden Abyss on PSVita.

The little known developer is obscure enough that we couldn't guess whether they have enough manpower to work on two major titles at the same time.

The original Syphon Filter on PSone was one of the best post-Metal Gear Solid stealth games but it's lone PlayStation 2 outing was never as successful as the portable offerings.

I actually thought that the PS2 game was a lot of fun. The one where you could play co-op online. I guess it was Omega Strain. My friends and I had a blast playing through those missions together.

I'll admit I'm excited about this, I had the first 3 on my PS1. Sony's exclusives tend to be pretty robust games now, if not incredible, so I'd be surprised if this sucked. Then again, the first 3 haven't held up well... Anyway, whatever, I'm sure we'll soon see. I hope it's different enough to Splinter Cell: Conviction, because I could imagine it being a clone of that for some reason, not that SC:C was a bad game of course.

its pedigree is damn better than stupid bald guy going for revenge
