Hi all,
I am currently on my second T300 unit experiencing exactly the same problems with the second unit as the first jusr 14 months after buying it and with very sporadic use as I don't get time to play much if at all during the summer.
So with summer months out the way I sit down and do a few hours of racing and suddenly the FFB starts to fall off and go kind of 'notchy' (not clicking or seized) just FFB cutting in and out. First of all it was cutting in and out then pretty much just stopped all FFB altogether. I turned it off and on and again to try and 'reset' it and it recalibrated fine, no problems there, motor seems strong and it worked for a few minutes and did the same again. This is exactly what my first unit did before I replaced it with this one and that one didn't have much use either (both bought brand new).
Now I know your probably screaming 'it's overheated!' at this point, having done some research before posting I'm now aware of the over heating issues the wheel has and I've seen that there is a Noctua fan upgrade for it. So thinking my problems may be solved but reluctant to buy and fit something to a dead unit I took the lid off and run a strong fan into the motor and try again. Sure enough it lasts longer this time, maybe 5 minutes of hope but the symptoms return and the motor was maybe 'warm' to touch at best.
I play in a converted garage which is always cooler than the rest of the house so I'm not convinced it is overheating, it surely isn't now with the fan on it however maybe the damage is done? But then it seems strong on calibration and for the first few minutes of play when it's been idle for a while so I'm confused.
One other observation, the fan is ALWAYS on from the moment the device that its plugged into is switched on (be it PS4 or PC) until it is switched off at the wall even after the PC or PS4 is turned off. I can't remember if it had always done this from new, I don't think it did but the previous unit I had certainly did this when I replaced it as I remember thinking it may have been something to do with it's fault. All this makes me think, could it be a faulty thermostat causing the wheels to think they are over heating and reducing the power to the motor? Is that a thing? Can it be replaced?
I love the wheel, I've tried MS Sidewinder, G25, G27, G29, T500 and this wheel in my years of gaming and this is by far my favourite. I can't afford to upgrade to anything 'better' or even replace the unit at this stage so any suggestions regarding DIY repairs would be great.
Many thanks and sorry for essay!!
