The five Grand Prix Manufacturers Association teams, BMW, Honda, McLaren, Renault and Toyota have submitted their entry forms for the 2008 FIA Formula One World Championship.

In a statement issued on Monday the GPMA said, "The teams look forward to the FIA's acceptances, and to beginning discussions with the FIA in order to finalise the regulations for 2008. The GPMA members are united and remain committed to improve the sport for the benefit of all stakeholders. Significant progress has been made in the negotiations between the GPMA and the commercial rights holder, and discussions are ongoing."
The manufacturers have submitted their entry forms for 2008, which was no real suprise. However, another team has signed which was thought to be gone from F1 forever. The owner, however, has expressed a lot of interest in returning to F1, and it was revealed that Paul Stoddart will enter Formula One in 2008 as the European Minardi F1 team.

Former Minardi owner Paul Stoddart will re-enter Formula One in 2008. He submitted his team at the FIA as 'European Minardi F1 team Limited' he revealed today. Minardi was sold in 2005 to Red Bull, but Stoddart will be back soon.

"I've lodged myself an entry as European Minardi F1 team Limited," the Australian aviation entrepreneur told Reuters on Tuesday.

New teams that are interested to enter Formula One need to be submitted by March 31 2006. Stoddart's team would complete the maximum of 12 Formula One teams.
Excellent!

I am so glad to see both the names of Stoddart and Minardi in Formula One again!

Really? Would you really want to see the perennial backmarking whinger back? In preference to a team with real backing and real professionalism like Penske or Prodrive?

I hope that that's Blake-the-proud-Aussie talking, and not Blake-the-F1-fan.

Why do they limit it to 12 teams? David Richards and Prodrive are a bit stuck now, aswell as various other teams that could of been interested.

Bad FIA. :grumpy:

Good Minardi. :) I find Stoddart one of the fairest blokes around personally Giles, yeah he can whine alot, but so can Todt or Flav. Would be nice to see him back in the paddock.
👍

It's nice to see Minardi and Stoddart back. Great to cheer for a backmarker, and great to have someone honest in F1 other than Webber. I want someone to keep Ron Dennis and Jean Todt on their toes and Paul Stoddart is just the man to do that.

Ouch.

Maybe I am biased, but I have always been partial to Staddart, and despite his whinging, he ran a proffesional outfit on a very tight budget. Considering the resources, I don’t think many people could have done much more with that team.

In preference to Penske or Prodrive? Maybe. I would definately prefer a Stoddart run Minardi over some of the teams circulating towards the back these days.

If a team does not need half a billion dollars to be competitive in 2008, then I can see Minardi doing much better than you seem to give them credit for.

good speech:)

hmm, penske in F1, eh? That'll be an yellow F1 car with a 2.4l V8 Porsche powerplant and DHL sponsorship :D

 But in IRL they have red and white cars with Marlboro sponsorship. Kinda like the McMercs in the mid 90's.

👍

I don't agree with it, but that was a very good response.

Like I said earlier it's good to have someone back (Stoddart) who doesn't have a rod up their butt. He's a really down to earth bloke. If points were given for heart, Minardi would earn a lot of them, alas they aren't.

On a slightly different issue (let's hope someone does read my post), so 12 teams are permitted entry or something? No junior Merc team? I'm guessing that super aguri was a good move made by Honda.

Blake clear this up for us, pronto.

Yes, there is a limit of 12 teams. This is to preserve the revenue share for each team. Also, if there is the full complement of teams, each team is worth more.

Minardi is not guarenteed entry. He has merely submitted the request.

The FIA chooses which 12 entries to take.

Confirmed applications are from Renault, BMW-Sauber, McLaren-Mercedes, Toyota, Honda, and Minardi.

Teams that already agreed to the 2008 Concorde Agreement and thus should have applications filed are Ferrari, Williams, Red Bull, Toro Rosso, Midland, and Super Aguri.

New teams that could be filing applications as we speak but no proof of this has been made yet are Direxiv, Prodrive, Penske, Eddie Irvine's team, and the remotely possible Schumacher-Brawn-VAG team.

That means 17 possible teams, of which only 12 can make it.

I read that there are a total of 15 teams entered:

With FOM
Ferrari
Williams
Super Aguri
Red Bull
Toro Rosso
Midland

GPMA
McLaren
BMW Sauber
Honda
Toyota
Renault

Others
Penske (unconfirmed)
Prodrive (unconfirmed)
Minardi

I don't know of any confirmations of Direxiv, Irvine, Jordan or any others submitting entries.

The teams that have previously signed up to the 08 Concorde Agreement are guaranteed entry into the 08 championship (but not thereafter unless by private arrangement with FIA/FOM). The other 8 teams are notionally in the same 'hat', although one has to presume that a currently-running team would have the advantage over any startup/returnee in a competitive evaluation.

I think it would be cool to get prequalifying back. Now that would be something that made Fridays worth going to...

Agreed. The only sensible way to go about something like that, however, is to run pre-qualifying in the old 1-hour–12-lap system.

15 minutes isn’t really worth much to the fans, and a one lap shootout doesn’t give the lower-ranked teams much time to get into a groove.

One thing, though: Is the cost of F1 (even in 2008) too high to warrant the expense in running a team when there is a possibility that your cars could not be running past friday?

They should leave the field fully open... people have been complaining that F1 is on the verge of dying lately, and now we have 'too many' teams. I say bring em on, let's get some good racin' goin! :D

too many teams is a safety hazard. Plus, they'd need to redo the point system.

Prodrive have submitted an entry, link.

F1Racing.net
David Richards' Prodrive has submitted an entry for the 2008 Formula One Championship they announced today. At least 12 other teams have submitted an entry already for the 2008 F1 championship.

"Formula One is still regarded as the pinnacle of motorsport and therefore a natural next step for Prodrive," said Richards in a statement.

F1 supremoe Ecclestone said there will be a maximum of 12 places available and thus it is expected Prodrive will have to challenge Paul Stoddart's Minardi team, who applied earlier this week.

Personally I reckon they could do well if they are accepted. But then there's Minardi too, do we really need Super Aguri? :P

EDIT: FIA Announce 22 Teams Have Applied.

F1Racing.net
The FIA today revealed that a total of 22 teams have applied for the 12 available slots in the 2008 F1 championship. Among those 22 teams are the 11 current F1 teams, the application of David Richards' Prodrive and Paul Stoddart's Minardi team.

The FIA's statement read: "The FIA has received applications from 22 teams wishing to compete in the 2008 FIA Formula One World Championship."

"All applicants have been invited to a meeting in London on April 10, 2006."

Thats just crazy!! Wow!!!

 thats a lot, but why are they so interrested now in the F1.

Really weird:dunce:

Because it only costs $300,000 or something like that to enter from the 08 season onwards, it used to be around $48 million.

Super Aguri will become a Honda B team for mainly Japanese competitors and Japanese investment. Aguri Suzuki says it's a complete Japanese team that's just based in the UK with assistance from Honda. I like to think of it as the Japanese version of Renault (French tyre, french team etc) except only at the other end of the grid.

Damn.. How long ago was it we were worried that the grids were gonna get smaller...
Shame its limited to 24 Cars, although F1 is influence by money so that may change to allow a few more in

We don't even know all 22, which is amazing.

11 confirmed 2006 teams
2 confirmed new teams (Prodrive and Minardi)

6 unconfirmed teams:
Direxiv
Eddie Irvine's Team
Penske
Craig Pollock's Team
Schumacher-Brawn Team
Team Dubai

That still leaves 3 other teams or more that we've yet to hear of...

They're nuts to think that they can limit the grid to 24 cars if the entry fee is going to drop that much. Of course, the standard of competition might drop back to the heyday of pre-qualifying, so they do have some justification. But if 22 teams have shown an active interest in the sport, maybe they should consider expanding the grid to something like 30 cars and allow an additional 3-4 teams in.
