Technical Internet question (UK Only)

Giles, maybe you can help...

do you know of any Uk ISP that lets you use a laptop in any location with a landline to dial up to the internet..?

say i have one internet account that i need to use anywhere...i have my username and password and if i am at a friends house, i just plug into his landline, or at any house as long as i have thier permission and a BT line but WITHOUT having to change any dial up networking settings?

any help would be appreciated..

thanks

i currently do that at the moment, i'm just using a basic monthly freeserve connection and i take it to my brothers house and just plug in. i use to be able to do it with AOL until i binned them, sorry i cant really give you a better answer

yeah...i do that also with my freeserve connection, buti stil have to change the 'dialing from' section in dial up networking to the phone number of the house from which i am dialling..

any companies that allow you free acess to thier service without all that crap?

Yes, you can use pretty much any ISP. If they're using a non-regional numbe (say 08457), then you can dial from any landline in the country as long as it's not within an office.

The trick is to set up Dialling Rules. Go to your modem control panel, and configure your current location. I use two: Direct and Office. I set my country and area code as the same on each, but put a '9' into the "outside line" setting on the "Office" location.

Then, in the Dial-Up Networking Control Panel, edit the connection that you use for the internet. Make sure that you configure it to "Use Dialling Rules". This will split the number that you're dialling into Country, Area and Number. This, when combined with your Location settings, allows the system to change the number that's dialled depending on which location you set.
