I was just wondering I enjoy drifting with 1000HP Supras, but I also enjoy spinning the tyres on a 200 HP 86. So I was just curious as to see what the people of GTP thought about Drifting on Power, and drifting on Technique. Which is more fun? Which is the easiest and the like. I know Technique probably takes alot more skill, and power is really just laying on the throttle. But I was just curious. This may seem like a stupid thread, but it's not really. Which is the coolest, more enjoyable, and in general better.

When i first began, i drift with my 800hp+ skyline, and now that i switched to sim tires on my s14, drifting on technique (maintaining longer lost of traction) is much more fun

wow...my low hp cars are almost stock but go sideways almost instantly with no suspension mods. My Altezza for example has about 280hp and sims and stage 1 weight reduction. it drifts very nicely and idunno...it's easier for me to drift low power than high powered vehicles

I don't like anything high-powered to the point where it barks instead of growling. If you have a hard time controlling the RPM during drifting, too much power. Aside from that, power is insignificant.

I hate high power car... my max is probably from 650 and down.. otherwise i dont drift it ;) but yeah i love low power car and how it drifts so nicely...300-500 is perfect i think...

I use anywhere from 200-600hp on my drift cars. Most of them are Red with white rims in the 470-500hp range with normal or sports. I do however have a whole fleet of white cars with black rims that are in the 200-280hp range with sims. I like both quite a bit, it just depends on the track, which I choose. I just match up the tires with the horsepower and feel of the car, and I end up with alot of fun cars.;)

that has nothing to do with it... i use brake and faint and no matter what the hp is, it doesn't make me spin out more entering a drift...

yes haveing more hp means greater speeds, thus entering the corner faster than a lesser hp car... just have to compinsate to keep ur drift angle and control the throttle...

when people complain about cars, i believe its just lack of experiance...

i believe that practicing with a low hp car, if not stock is the best teacher there is. u learn how to control the car with steering and how to shift the weight, and not use hp to bring the rear of the car around...

i would sugest to anyone that is starting drifting or has been drifting and wants to become better, is to get a completly stock AE86, not the SS version, normal AE86 and put sims on it and drift that car for 2-3 weeks w/o touching another car and you will greatly improve...

some people use lots of from turbo and all the stages, but i only use stage 2 or 1. and SIMS. ofcourse. anything over stage2 makes the car heavy and too fast for sims.

Technique. I'm just itching to get back into the game! Before my PS2 died all I had been doing was races so I haven't drifted in a long time. Can't wait for my Triumphant return.

ok i also have highspeed drifting cars its IMPREZZA LM . tune by sheron...;) thats the only cars i drift with high hp 900+ with s.soft & slick rear .. its drift damn good ... but i like low hp also all mods xcept for the lsd, weight & vcd ( 4wd cars ) ;)

Drifting a 1000hp Supra requires the same skill than a 200hp trueno.
Drifting a high hp car requires skill on the accel and countersteering.
Low hp cars require skill keeping sideways the car.
I started with high hp cars and I have now an Altezza with sims and 280hp, and I found it as difficult as drifting a 1200hp Zonda C12s.

It's not a matter of the car, it's a matter of the driver.

And the survey says.......
your wrong...

High HP cars can be driven with mostly throttle alone, low hp cars def. take more skill and teach you how to drift....

I drift with 300hp max... usually anywhere between 250 and 273 (I believe thats my highest HP and its on the 180SX). You have to use alot more inertia and the cars natural momentum to link drifts and especially to pull off longer drifts.... I started out with like 430hp cars, and i didnt like it, so I slowly decreased the power till it became more comfortable, altho it did also get increasingly difficult...

But don't you need any skill to use the throttle well? How is there more skill in using another part of the car well. I don't see how it can take more "skill", which nobody has really bothered to define.

depends on my mood.
If i'm in my extreme drifting mood, i'll use cars with sims and nothing higher than 300 hp.
If i'm feelin lazy, i'll just use cars with around 500-600 hp and medium tires ^_^

I think High Hp is over rated drifting or not... Anyone one can go fast in a straight line... I like drifting for the technique, learning to control and getting to know the car. I think all my cars are under 300hp too except for the car's I haven't converted to drift.

controling the angle of the drift and keeping a steady throttle position takes skill, using a hp car and just going in to a turn and tapping the accel quickly to keep the car sideways requires no skill and should really be considered plain overstear...

That's not true, if you just floor it with a high-power car you will spin out quite swiftly. High-power cars require less control entering the drift and as milefile pointed out, more control during the drift. Since initiating the drift is the hard part, this does put underpowered cars at a little more difficult overall, but high-power cars are also difficult in their own way. To master one without the other is pointless.

i had already siad that, but u can keep tapping the throttle instead of holding it down, u can easily control a drift by just tapping the throttle... its very easy with a High hp car... i find cars with alot of hp no-fun to drift because its just to easy, i like a challenge....

well i find that low and high hp cars are fun to drift because with low hp cars its hard to get into the drift and then its easy not to oversteer but hard to keep the drift going long. on the other hand its easy to get into it with high hp cars and hard to keep from oversteering but easy to keep sliding. if that made any sense ill be surprised

Why not have both Hp and Technique? Myself, I thoroughly enjoy drifting with my 945hp S2000 LM as much as I enjoy my 280 hp MR2 GTS. :D
Both are tricked to the max, and do just as well in grip racing as in drift.
