GTMSA Presents

The Tour of GT4

Stage 5: El Capitan
Racers Cup: 10 Lap Race

Deadline 11.59pm GMT Sunday 12th September

picture.php

Moving away from the coast and in to the mountains we face the first of the longer Racers Cup stages. 10 laps around El Capitan should be a barrel of fun with it's dusty fast corners tempting the Lotus' back end to step out :). There are several good battles going on in GC and with the battle for the final cup starting perhaps a new driver will come to the fore...

Feel free to discuss sector times but please don't mention lap times or total race time.

General Information and Regulations

All rules, regulations, car specifications, and races are controlled by TGT4 sanctioning body, GTMSA. Any and all questions should be directed to GTMSA officials (namely me ABud) and officials will do their best to answer in a timely and accurate manner.

All drivers must run at the specified weights and horsepower settings provided by GTMSA for each round.

  • Standard Online Racing Rules Apply.
  • No Cheating, hybrids, etc. You must run the car specifications I give you
  • Try keeping at least 2 wheels on course. Long races = small mishaps, but absolutely NO shortcuts
  • No wall-riding as well. Combined with penalties, this will slow you down considerably, so don't do it.
  • All decisions by GTMSA officials are final
  • Curbs/rumble strips count as track

If a driver doesn't manage to submit a time for a particular stage a penalty time will be assigned, calculated as follows:

110% of the slowest time.

Eg. If the slowest time is 19'25.346 the penalty time for all non submitting racers will be:

21'00.365

Also if a driver joins the series part way through their GC time for the races missed will be calculated in the same way

The Car

Lotus Motorsport Elise running +20% Power 241 Bhp & -10% Weight 630 Kg

You are too kind. :sly:

edit: Got my run in. Think I'll stay with it, if for nothing else but the time I posted. Had to laugh when I saw the race time.

Yep, you can start from this round. There's a sign up thread (links in my sig) and feel free to ask any questions you have. Welcome to the series.

What about tire wear, ABud?

Can we drive on the yellow hatched area just before the pit entrance?

Sorry for the late questions, but I've just finished my 24 hour race at La Sarthe and havn't been able to run this race until right now.:nervous:

Edit:
Never mind my question about the tire wear, I see that ABud answered Austin343's question about this earlier, so there should be no tire wear for our cars.

Respectfully,

It's a pretty feeble effort from me this week - I spent a couple of fruitless hours on it a week or two ago, pushing too hard because ten laps seemed too short a race to have any major mistakes. I ended up setting some very fast lap times, but never making it past lap four. :dunce: So I only made a renewed effort about an hour ago, and although I wasn't as fast on individual laps, I at least completed an acceptable race on my second full attempt. Unfortunately, I made one major mistake, clobbering the wall in turn 2 after a rear tire caught in the sand entering the kink, putting me way too far inside with the back end very unsettled as I was supposed to brake. I took completely the wrong approach to saving it and whacked the wall, although because I hit it with the back of the car, I didn't get a penalty. It cost me time, but not much - about half a second - so if you want to give me a penalty of some sort, feel free.

This track is brutal in this car, with the bumps wreaking havoc on the stiff suspension and light chassis. I couldn't master it over ten laps, so if holl01 submitted a time, he'll have beaten me by at least ten seconds, for sure.

Also, I don't know whether it was funny or just annoying that I had to lap three cars at the end of the race. :dunce: For what they're worth, even though it's after the deadline and I was kind of all over the place with regard to both my lines and my times, my fastest splits are 32.212 - 1'10.772.

It's within the rules to keep racing and submit a time even if you get a rev penalty, although I think most people would restart in those circumstances.

Sorry to GTsail290 for not replying until now but the hatched areas are fine to drive in - the track limits rules are much more relaxed for this series, just dont go beyond what is reasonable!

Congrats to all people who got their times in, the penalty time is a whopper this round - not far off 4 mins!! Also well done to Austin343, who despite doing a 'feeble' race won by miles again:dunce:

Nice race Austin343! Very feeble!

*snip*...Unfortunately, I made one major mistake, clobbering the wall in turn 2 after a rear tire caught in the sand entering the kink, putting me way too far inside with the back end very unsettled as I was supposed to brake. ^^^^^^This is why we won't catch Eddy Merckx/Austin343 during this tour.

If I spun out, I would lose 10 seconds, while Austin only loses half a second!!

Like Austin343 says, the Lotus does bounce around a lot, but still is quite entertaining to drive at El Capitan.

Now, about a penalty, what about having to carry water-bottles for the rest of us blokes who will get mighty thirsty having to eat your dust at the up-coming Grand Canyon race?:) Nah, just kidding! Excellant driving Austin343!

This track and car combo i found to be pretty tough, in that there is always a tough corner not far up the road to get ready for. Holding t1 flat then getting the car straightened up to pull up for t2 was always a challenge. Then you've gotta get through t5,t6 which is a challenge in any car let alone a tail happy 630kg Elise. Then holding t10 flat but still being able to slow down for t11 could also be tricky, t13 was tricky in this car aswell. Despite all this my only noticeable mistake was sticking it in the sand at t9 once.
Normally i can cruise around El Capitan, pretty easily, but with this car i had to concentrate hard the whole way around, just to avoid making any mistakes.
This was a fun/challenging race, im looking forward to the next one

Cheers

Well, the feebleness would have been quite apparent had holl01 entered as he said he would. Seriously, though, I was very inconsistent, and the crash is something that I hate to have in a submitted attempt. I'm just not very good at longer races - I'm "built" for time trials. One thing that true aliens can do that I can't is to approach their single-lap limit for every lap of a multi-lap race; holl01 said in a Youtube comment that in a four-lap race at Tahiti Maze, he'd have to slow down by about half a second per lap over his hotlap pace in order to keep it clean. To have any hope of avoiding the walls for so long, I have to slow down by at least a couple of seconds per lap.

Anyway, here's my race, fast-forwarded in many places in order to keep it within the boundaries both of Youtube's time limit and of the puny capacity of my camera's SD card.

Does anyone else think that these recordings make the car sound like a Daihatsu Copen?

I agree !!

I think Austin should be the "Domestique" for the next round at GC.
It will okay for you to win, but you have to keep the rest of us supplied with water & powergels 💡
