*****The Civic is Alive! I got it working with no turbo******

Yes its true. The Civic formerly known as 12sec Civic has been brought back to driving condition. I had to buy all kinds of fluid resevoirs and hoses because there was a fire under my hood. Since the turbo is black and crappy now, it is outta there. The Civic starts and is running on just the B16A VTEC 1.6 motor now. It sounds pretty rough, like I had a high lift camshaft. It doesnt have as much power as a stock B16A because I put lower compression piston heads in it when I put on the turbo to prevent pinging. This might also account for the rough engine noise. I notice that when I accelerate it revs up in stages?! (Hard to explain)

So now it is known as "Roughly 14sec Civic"

I like to drive it, and it by no means slow. I could still give alot of people a run for their money. I am guessing I am pushing 150-155hp, and 155hp in a Civic is like Mustang 5.0 fast.

So I intend to eventually put back the stock piston heads and maybe just keep the little bugger. But for now, no more mods; I am thinking of a healthy cam set or something to bring it up to maybe 175hp. maybe I will totally end up building this engine up to a 200hp all-motor screamer in the future!

But I just thought you might like to know!

PS If you see an ugly Gold 1990 Civic with 255mm tires and some pretty hardcore 5 spoke polished aluminum rims. You dont have to be scared if your driving anything faster than 6.2 seconds 0-60. My Civic used to have a pretty consistent 4.1 second 0-60 due to AWD and turbo torque!

I am going to try and get a 1/4 mile run off whenever possible, but that is hard to do in Canada during winter. Although the weather is 10 degrees celcius here.

Damn that thing must be fast as hell then.

but Mustang 5.0s aren't fast as hell, that's the problem... in fact they're pretty slow, for a RWD V8 car.

heh. now i can't wait to put that motor back in the Integra, and beat the crap out of those 911s... ;)

I'd say rough running might be timing. Your ignition may also have been damaged in the fire - if you're getting misfires that would explain why the rough running is more pronounced going up hills. I'd also like to interject that a misfiring B16A is nowhere near fourteen second quarters. :D

I don't think low compression pistons by themselves would cause rough running....unless you're also running colder plugs....then the A/F mix might not be burning completely. Do you smell gas at all? keep an eye on your fuel consumption as well.

What caused the fire?

OK, this engine is screwed. I guarantee pretty much 100% power is there but it is very noisy and sounds rough and kind of.....raspy or grindy.

It is quite fast but just enough to have fun, not enough to be a serious performance car. I dont know why the engine is so loud. I am thinking exhaust?!

I need advice here, could I have a bent valve or some valves not closing or opening all the way.

The fire was caused by the turbo, it burned up after about 3 hours of full throttle driving. Burnt up about $500 worth of **** underhood. Wires and crap.

I can feel good solid power and the engine feels perfect though, other than noise.

PS, a Mustang 5.0 isnt actually fast, it just has alot of low torque like a pickup truck. They dont actually have that much power all the way through the power band ya know!

My brother has one (1988 LX 5.0 HO hatch) It feels pretty punchy but it has nothing up top. Not very thrilling to drive but the low torque can be kind of addicting, but it is very deceivingly slow, try and race someone and you'll see how quickly you get your ass handed to you.

A Bent valve would result in lost power. Get a compression test just to be sure (I don't think they're expensive).

If the engine is strong but loud, maybe an exhaust gasket got burned up? If the turbo went up, maybe the exhaust manifold gasket melted. Run the engine with the hood up. Listen and see if you can pinpoint the source of the sound. :)
