READ Description: "You don't need to be level 40 to unlock the dirt and car damage, just patience and a destructive streak". Video description translated by MidianGTX :)

Looks good to me. :)

I haven't been following the damage saga but I will give my point of view on this supposed level system. If in fact, you must earn experience and "level up" to unlock greater damage modelling, it is the greatest feature implemented in a game ever. If you are 12 and just want to crash to see how cool it is, you will be disappointed. If you show experience and "respect" in how you drive, and are able to properly control yourself during races, you will be rewarded with a richer and note complete gaming experience. If that's the concept, than I am all for it.

I'm with you on this i think the level system is going to be great.

I think the level system is going to be odd, it usually is in racing games with it. But for darn sure, it's going to be a hoot! :D

i think 50 is the largest, i saw it on a screenshot or something.....

There was a screenshot where a guy was level 15 and was at 30% complete. Simple math and you can figure out that 100% is at level 50.

so what if it takes a long time to destroy a car, now we can host online destruction derbys ;)

edit: I know there is going to be a bunch of people that want to stone me for saying such trash in these parts, but it still is a game after all.

Yes, well put and I hope you are right. On some level this makes perfect sense. I just never thought they would try and pull this. Maybe that is what they did. Wow!!! If Kaz did this, then more power to him. 👍

Remember the early days, when Kaz seemed to be starting a whole new genre of racing/RPG? Alot of the decisions in GT5 seem to stem from that. Time will tell.

GT games have always has small hints of RPG elements in them, but this one really enhances the RPG factor alot with the whole level system. I am totally down for it to be like this....but im hoping that the level caps grow with time and DLC....possibly stretching all the way to lvl 100.

Remember, PD wants to keep their online community strong and thriving...and the only way to really do that is to increase level cap and by adding DLC.

My fingers are crossed.

I swear I heard that gamespot douche mention a horn he earned was number 200 or something. Probably not 200 horns in the game, maybe 200+ "items" that horn being just one. There are some little things that still puzzle me and I know more than a few surprises. I think unlockable damage is weird, but japanese game designers are quite weird.

Update : 23 november 2010

Our Gtplanet member (Gamer28) posted a new video of a more advanced damage in GT5 (rally circuit, rally premium car, some rumors sates that the driver is at level 40 in the game but not confirmed))

Could this be the final damage system in GT5 ? did polyphony digital implement a progressive damage system depending on the level of the driver ? we dont know yet. But we must be cautious, the translation of what the author of the video said states that "You don't need to be level 40 to unlock the dirt and car damage, just patience and a destructive streak"

In a related subject, our Gtplanet member (Darkpitiless) downloaded a system update 1.01 and posted details and pictures of it here :
https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=133127

in this update of 133 MB the online portion of the game is finally open, so we will see soon how polyphony is managing the damage system in online races (hopefully damage could be activated/disactivated in online races + choice of level of damage)

Nowhere does it say that the driver is at level 40. The person who posted that video on youtube explicitly states that "you don't need to be level 40 to unlock the dirt and car damage".

Why does this keep on being circulated as a fact, when it isn't proven or stated anywhere?!

I already said this :

but you are right, I edited the post saying that the level 40 of the author of the video was just a rumor, thanks :)

Ah ok, no probs :) Its just that I can see this getting blown out of proportion...

I believe people got the idea of damage at level 40 from the trophy list saying something about achieving a certain damage

It seems odd this is not a problem for other games with damage... doesn't having damage options do this for you and more?

Why do we have such an elitest view here that those who like to crash shouldn't be allowed to have fun? If you paid your $60 and want to drive cars into walls all day, why not let them? It doesn't hurt you...

Again looking back on it, have we confirmed that you must pay for damage? I believe in some other games damage cost is just deducted from winnings and if you have no winnings you just don't get any money but your car is still fixed...

This would mean you could never really dip into negative money or end up with an undriveable stable of cars... is this not how it works in GT5?

It seems like a lot of the reasons this is good are again solutions to problems that don't exist...

I don't know... it seems this has never been an issue before and we now run into a "solution" for the problem that never existed that is convoluted and punishes the truest GT fans who are good drivers and have waited for damage for so long only to force the hand of unskilled drivers when an option to turn off damage would do so just as well or better...

Update : second update for 23 november 2010

In the thread of : yamauchi tweets
https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=128579

we can find the latest yamauchi tweet as follows :

"It will appear later. RT @tanzen: @Kaz_Yamauchi Konbawa Yamauchi San! I'm lv 17 on GT 5 (review copy) and still no mechanical damage, you..."

What does this mean ? We were right about the progressive damage system in the game based on the level achieved in the game ?

Don't like this at all... you shouldn't have to level up so high to unlock that type of game feature!
