Think this depends if you are talking in absolute or relative terms. Dihydrogen monoxide has 100% more hydrogen molecules than there are stars in the solar system. "One" sounds small but "twice as many" sounds like a lot.

But it's true. One is barely bigger than zero as a number but I think it's also infinitely bigger than zero in absolute terms. If there were one fewer universe we wouldn't exist. Mr Micawber springs to mind.

Which is the cardinal difference (a natural number) and the proportional difference (a percentage, ratio or order of magnitude). I agree; twice as much or double does sound more grand in scale than one more.
