As we see new cars come including concept's for future vehichles. Alot of new cars/concepts are some of the most gross designs we've ever seen. This leads me to the question. Is the future of cars not so good?

What do you think?

I think the most interesting thing to see what happens in 20-30 years is if that if we will still be driving around w piston engines in new cars.

The design doesn't matter that much to me. Unless you're a brand-fascist you can always find a car that appeals to you.

I don't even have my driver's license yet and I can say that it shouldn't matter what the thing looks like, as long as it gets you where you need to go. That's just me though; although there are a few cars I would buy just for looks.

In the next 2 weeks I will be at the North American International Auto Show, so I will be able to tell you for sure then ;)

Yeah, I guess NAIAS is coming up.
If cars go the way of these ugly japanese designs, then I'm not gonna like it.
I hope that RWD cars will make a comeback, along with V8's.

Concept cars are all about fresh and radical approaches to design, the use of new materials and manafacturing processes. Some of the ideas and styling cues from the concept cars are used in production cars, but usually very subtley.

I dont know what car manufacturers you are in to, but I know Chrysler is showing its new 2005 Chrysler 300C that has a HEMI V8 rear wheel drive. There is also going to be another rear drive touring car that will be replacing the cirrus called the Airflite. Chryslers whole line of sedan cars is making the change over to rear wheel drive and a handfull of them will have the HEMI option. The Crossfire will be making the change over to the HEMI as well.

I think at this point the "HEMI" name is just a gimmic like having a retro Thunderbird.

Thats what all of us here at the dealership say. It isnt really a true HEMI obviously, but it is a 5.7 V8 that puts down alot of power. All they do is slap a HEMI sticker on it and sell it for $15,000 more

They're starting to. There have been numerous new models in the last 5-6 years with RWD.

Lexus IS300
Honda S2000
Nissan 350Z
Infiniti M45
Infiniti G35
Lincoln LS
Mazda RX-8
Pontiac GTO/Monaro
Chevy SSR

I'm sure I've forgotten a few. Let's also not forget that BMWs, Mercedes and Porsches are all RWD (with AWD variants) and have always been.

RWD is alive and well.

Pretty much... Bastard your in Michigan, I'd love to go there it's where they build the Viper.

Nick:cheers:

i hope honda and pontiac leave the figth for the world most ugly car.(element, sunfire, aztec etc, etc)

but there are a lot of companies making new powerful and nice looking cars(sti, mustang cobra, carrera gt etc, etc)

Most cars will be probably be alot slower due to teh change to electric and hydrogen engines. They wil also be alot more streamline, but dont take taht to mean they will look better. There are alot of electric concepts that are extremely narrow.
So cars may get better, they may get alot worse

Here in the UK it seems that politicians on all sides have made it there sole purpose to destroy private motoring I presume other countrys are mostly the same these days. I'm just glad I've lived through the 'golden years' I reckon in about 10 years time any fun in a car will take place on a race track or Playstation:(

And yes increasing safety regulations are forcing car designs to become more and more ugly:ill:

haha thats funny because I live only 15 minutes from the Chrysler Proving Grounds, and I get to go out there alot for my job, and I get to see a bunch of Vipers tearin around in there. Last time I was out I saw an 04 GTS-R.
I get to see alot of the concepts too, some have the black car covers on them though, but I did see a red CHRYSLER SRT-4 neon concept, that was nice. :D

That's Dodge Neon SRT-4, not Chrysler. Although most of us know that Chrysler owns Dodge, it doesn't mean they hold the name for all Dodge's cars/trucks. Anyway, on to my question. In a Mopar mag, I saw an '07 concept, it was the Chrysler Dragon. Heard, or seen anything on that, it looked pretty sweet.

I know that, but what IM telling you is that at the Chrysler Proving Grounds, they have a Neon SRT-4, that has "Chrysler" badge on the deck lid, and the Chrysler wing emblem on the front grill. Its just a concept car, and it did have a 2.4l turbo badge on the deck lid as well. It has 17's with dual piston calipars on the fronts, painted red. They already have released a couple Chrysler Neons but they are just base models. Now that Plymouth went under, Chrysler picked up their production. I have not herd anything about a Chrysler Neon turbo ever being produced.

Oh ok, I thought you just meant a regular Dodge Neon, makes better sense now that I know you said the concept Neon SRT-4.:P What about that Chrysler Dragon?

the up side of the future of cars is that the environment will suffer less. larger engines will be phased out or become truck only..... or maybe not...

motor racing is a huge sport with heaps of followers. ppl build thier own cars up to emulate these race cars and while there is still a market for racecar loving ppl they manufaturers will still pump out high powered cars reguardless of the environment. and thats a fact, cause the mighty dollar is still the most important thing to 99% of the population.

bring on the star trek ecconomy! maybe then scientists wont be begging for funding and they can do more testin and find cures for the worlds horrible diseases...........

oops went off track! :P

Eh... anything higher than bastard, damn you! j/k :mischievous: I haven't seen a Viper since summer, even then there's not a lot.

Nick:rolleyes:

I think that cars right now either look great or look horrible. Also I notice that most cars that are made with young drivers in mind look horrible. Just look at em, the Xb(X-Box, interesting...), the Element, Aztec, Sunfire, etc. That's mainly to blame on the car designers being level-headed middle age people who don't really know what kids want to see, or it's the kids themselfs showing a want to drive ugly cars.

Fortunately, most Japanese companies and virtually all European companies don't try to specifically make cars for teens. Instead, they try to just make cars that people in general will like to drive. Mazda, for one(the one company I really really follow, I follow the others too, but I'm not MazKid because of them) shifted from "cars people settle for" to "cars people enjoy driving". Back in the '80s up till the late '90s, Mazda made what many consider "meh" cars, everything except the RX-7 and Miata, essentially. Their other cars were either meant for economy(121/Demio, Carol, 323/Protege, 626, etc.), some utility(B-series, MPV, etc.), and some upscale(929/Millenia, Eunos cars, Xedos cars). Only thier sports cars were real "driver's cars"(ofcourse I consider my 323 to be a driver's car, but that's just me for the most part). Within the past 5 years, Mazda has broadened focus to include most things. The Mazda 6 is both a nice fairly upscale car and something you can push through the curves and zoom around in(up to the fairly lame 120mph limiter...). The RX-8 combines uniqueness, 4 seats(4 useable seats), and impressive performance(it's not meant to be a true sports car). The main place Mazda lacks in is power, but that's not what they are going for really. They just want to make cars that are easy and fun to drive every day.

Unfortunately, due to company partnerships, many cars are becoming twins, some with good results(one that comes to mind is the MX-6 and Probe, they were different in many ways but still the same platform and engines(with the exception of the 1st gen Probe that had a V6), and were reliable as all hell), and some with bad results(Tribute and Escape, atleast at the beginning it was bad, many reliability problems), and you can usually blame the company that provides the chassis and driveline.

I saw Autoline Detroit last night...they had the manager of Pontiac/GMC and then 2 media people...they were talking about the fact that Japanese cars are doing much better than American cars and they were making it sound like it was a war. Also the Pontiac/GMC lady congradulated herself on "lower" PPH numbers...PPH is Problems Per Hundred(at first I didn't know what the hell she was talking about, but she explained it at near the end of the show), and then one of the media people said something like "That's only getting closer to the quality of many Japanese cars" and this lady said "Well we at Pontiac/GMC are trying hard to get the quality up". Hey, atleast they are trying. I don't see how 2 companies that have been around in the US longer than all Japanese companies(in the US) still can't get quality right. Ohh wait, it must be that strive to make money. So they cheap out and get parts from countries such as Mexico, Taiwan, and China. Also they just want to make as many cars as they can in as little time as they can, so they lose quality in that.

And, the hybrid cars...Honda has Civic-based ones(except that FHX or whatever), and Toyota has the Prius and Rav4. They are basically taking thier most economic cars and trying to make them more economical. The price goes way up and out of it's class. What needs to happen is hybrid technology going into all types of cars. Mazda tries this on occasion, but Mazda likes Hydrogen. As early as '92 Mazda had Hydrogen concepts, the HR-X and HR-X2(Hydrogen Rotary). They also had a Hydrogen 1st gen Miata, now have a Hydrogen RX-8(using a hydrogen version of the Renesis), several diesel vehicles, several fuel-cell cars(starting in '92 with a golf-cart looking thing, '97 Demio, '99 Demio, and now a '01 Premacy), and soon a gas/electric Tribute. Fuel-cell, electric, and hydrogen cars will come out, but regular gas cars won't go away. Flying cars can't happen(just think about it for a minute, cars are dangerous on the ground, in mid air if something fails you fall to earth, that's not good). One technology that could happen would be self-guided cars as long as the road surface is still driveable for regular cars.

I'm in a family whose newest car is 11 years old. We'd never buy any hybrid car, and I can't really see us getting a new car at all...since we can fix the older cars cheaply and keep them running forever the only need to get something new would just be for showiness and personal preference. So really, the new car market doesn't mean anything to me. :)

Too much typing, must...stop...now...

I don`t know about anyone else but in ten years i can still see my self cruising around in an R34 GTR with about 100K of the new technology strapped to it taking down the newest of the new, and people will be amazed that an "older(as it will be then) car can do so well.
