The future of the GTP cool wall - and it's not what you think!

Should engine displacement be described only in cubic inches?

"Oh no!"

Yes ladies & gentlemen, I'll soon be taking over the GTP Cool Wall. BKGlover thinks he ruined it for some reason. I figure there's really not much he could have done to make it better. But, since there seems to be a nasty thought current that I'll ruin it as part of my "manliness crusade", I've created this thread to provide, in a Q&A format (even though no one's asked me any questions), any relevant information I can think of regarding the Cool Wall's new ownership. Starting with the one that seems to be on everyone's minds over in the Premium forum.

"I'm a brony, and I'm afraid you're going to try and lock us out somehow. What of it?"

No. The GTP Cool Wall is, strictly speaking, not going to be under the Partisans umbrella that doesn't exist yet. You can still nominate cars regardless of your TV fanbase participation. I'm not sure if poll owners can see who voted how in a private poll, but if they can, I won't use the information against you.

"Speaking of private polls, are the voting lists going to become public?"

No. I don't think it would be productive or useful.

"I nominated a car back when BKGlover was running the Cool Wall. Is it still in the pipeline?"

Yes. All previously nominated cars will go to polling as expected.

"Will there be any changes to the nomination process?"

No. Not yet, anyway. I may eventually narrow the range of allowable car types, but the Wall already differs from the Top Gear formula by allowing cars no longer in production to be polled, so then again, I may continue allowing race cars and so forth.

"Don't you tend to start things and not finish them?"

Unfortunately, yes. But there are plenty of other people lining up to take it, so if I find myself unable or unwilling to continue maintaining the Wall, one of them can have it.

"But I thought you got banned a while ago and might still be on some kind of last chance status! What happens if you get banned again? Or, what if real life gets in the way?"

Well then good luck I guess.

Seriously, though, I'll soon be making arrangements to have a backup curator in place just in case something happens. Like I said, it's not like there'd be any difficulty finding a replacement.

"So when are you going to start proving all this?"

Assuming Jordan sends back his 10-4, tomorrow and every other day thereafter (unless the mods think that's too spammy). The one change I'm making to the previous structure is to speed it up - two polls at a time makes for a very slow-moving system.

"Can you tell me the voting formula? Pretty please?"

BKGlover put it in the results thread along with a spreadsheet containing the Cool Wall results.

"Any other changes or ideas in the pipeline?"

At this point, I'm not really sure. I'm kicking around the idea of getting rid of "Meh" and raising the upper limit of "Uncool", since I think, to some degree, something boring or anonymous enough to be "meh" is uncool anyway. But I think it'll be better just to get things stable before I start making changes like that.

I could also whip up a pic-board graphic for flavor, but with nine sections (or eight, if the above-mentioned change takes place), it'd be wide and might take a while to load.

Any other questions, comments, or suggestions?

No. As I said, I'll be starting one every other day, unless the mods think that's too spammy. They will still run for a week each, however.

OK, must have missed that part. If you ever need help with anything, don't mind asking me, I have way to much free time these days

I think meh should be left. I think there is a line between thinking a car is uncool or just not caring for it, or being cool.

I can think a car is meh can't I? I might not think it's uncool, but I might not think it's cool either. Just sort of whatever. Kind of like I'd drive it because it's a car kind of thing.

Remove it if you want but I don't agree with it.

I agree. For example, a new Mini Cooper is "meh" to me. I don't think it's cool, nor uncool.

Good Luck W&N, you'll need it. It's only a matter of time until you get pissed off running this, then you'll quit.

How many curators has this wall seen now ? 4-5 ?
Why don't we just let the wall go off and die somewhere ? It is starting to get a bit .....

Anywho .... good luck to you on this.

I don't see why the polls have to be private. It has worked fine up to now with public polls.

Yep the poll NEEDS it. The recent Lexus was a point for me. It wasn't cool nor uncool enough for anything beyond a MEH.

I've always liked how public polls gave a little more insight into how other members voted. That's pretty much the only permanent change I'd make to the current format.

Poll question added. Removing metric displacement measurements is an idea I've been kicking around lately. It's probably a very stupid one, but I think, when judging a car's coolness, ci is better than cc or liters. Which is why I bother to convert them into cubic inches in the first place. What do you guys think?

It's probably a very stupid one

Yep. The majority of users are from places that don't use it (or, in the case of mainland USA, have largely stopped for any modern vehicles). Leave both if you want, but removing the more common measurement is certainly not smart.

Leave the metric in. Even if you look at just the US, almost all modern car engine displacements are quoted in metric units, and almost all Americans are familiar with that measurement scale. Historical American muscle cars have famous cubic inch designations to their engines (332, 427, 455, etc.), and I think those numbers add to the lore of the vehicles (justified or not), and thus should be included in the description. But it's just a really bad idea to quote all modern engines solely in cubic inches, especially sine all the manufacturers themselves quote them in liters in the US.

Call a 302 a 302, and a 2 liter a 2 liter. While there's some romance in measuring big motors by cubic inches, hardly anybody, even in the US, measures small engines by cubic inches.

The 302 for example I well I known by being called in cubic inches and liters though.

Yet it amazes me how many people don't realize they are the same thing.

Well known... but it's not exactly a 5.0. Converting introduces errors, whether intentional or not (5.0 sounds much sexier than 4.9).

Most 2.0s are areally 1.995s, 1.98s or 1.95s. Some are 2.055s. Looking for the exact number to convert to c.i. would be time consuming.

I say: Just take whatever is given and run with it. It's worth quoting c.i. for big American Iron, and you probably ought to continue doing so... but otherwise, you probably should go with what the manufacturer quotes and leave it at that.
