I've been meaning to gather eps for Legend of Galactic Heroes for some time, but the age of the show puts me off big time, when was it airing, the 70's? It's meant to be a top show though, one the best, I just dont want my eyes to bleed while watching it.

On another note, will be watching episode 16 of Hanasaku tonight, lovely to just relax with that before bed. Is the best way to end a sunday.

LOGH isn't so ancient as all that. Late 80's to mid 90's for all 4 seasons. Lots of great voice actors.

This is the kind of animation you can expect:

@ yaywalter, how do you decide what to add to the list? And also, looks like you've got a several year list going so far. Although I really can't say much about most of the M-N entries, LOGH was fantastic if you're accepting of old-school animation. Long, but one of the best animes I've yet seen. On the other hand, Nodame Cantabile gets a lot of love, but I found it to be rather unengaging. There's a practice current in CG animation where a fabric pattern is used as a fixed background for a character's clothes as the character moves across the screen which obviously is 1) very stylized, 2) not at all realistic, and 3) completely annoying to me, which is employed gratuitously in NC and which may have contributed to my disinterest, so if you can look beyond that you may have better luck with the series.

Well, all the anime on the list I've decided to acquire because of reading recommendations or reviews on other sites. However, I decide what actually goes on the list by watching the first 5-10 minutes of it and reading a basic overview of the plot on Wikipedia and/or ANN.

Regarding the fabric patterns, I actually think it's kinda cool. But it definitely gets old quick. And like you said, it's not at all realistic. I was able to get through Gankutsuou without clawing out my eyes though, so I'm sure I won't mind it in NC.

Ah crap, I was thinking of Gankutsuou.. Nodame Cantabile now that I check is one that is still tentatively on my list to watch due to very high ratings, but the story sounds kind of uninteresting...

Ah, ok. What's wrong with you?! I loved Gankutsuou. Except for the fact that my eyes hurt after I was done with it. :P

And don't all slice-of-life stories sound kind of uninteresting?

Does the animiamtion get significantly better as the series progresses, i would expect so if it went on for over half a decade? Also is it true its like 30 episodes of boredom until stuff starts to actually happen? I'm totally ignorant here, and have only heard a little bit about it from one person.

@yaywalter: Except Welcome to the NHK, because it was obvious that I would probably identify with the main character, being a hikikomori/NEET myself to a certain extent...

@ Hatcha: LOGH is very deliberate. There are several main story arcs, and therefore 4 seasons, which aren't that long. But in each one, it's not like action! action! action! There's a lot of thought and buildup before a couple episodes of great action. The series itself makes some references to strategy games, and the creator of LOGH said that it's basically a galactic chess game, so, like chess, there's a lot of development and tension and buildup before a climactic release and resolution.

Did you check My Anime List? There's viewer reviews and recommendations for similar shows.

You can also keep track of what you want to watch, what you did watch, what you plan on watching, etc.

Thankyou! Guess I'll have to try searching for HQ download links then, think these will be a right sod to get a hold of. Not looking forward to the task at hand at all :grumpy:

Just seen I've passed the 100 post mark, only took me 7 months.

edit; slybugga, we have a 75% anime compatibility (Y)

I've only seen the first few episodes, I think no more than ten at the most. Already there was a spaceship battle or two and a mansion got blown up, amongst other stuff.

Not Hanasaku Iroha ;)

Are you sure? Lemme see...

Wikipedia
Hanasaku Iroha centers around Ohana Matsumae, a 16-year-old teenager living in Tokyo, who is left in the care of her estranged grandmother, following her mother's elopement with her boyfriend. Ohana arrives at her grandmother's country estate to realize she is the owner of a Taishō period hot spring inn called Kissui. She begins working at Kissuisō, at her grandmother's request, but finds herself at odds with many employees and customers at the inn. Initially feeling discouraged, she decides to use her circumstances as an opportunity to change herself for the better and to make amends with her deteriorating relationship with the Kissuisō's staff for a more prominent future.

Sounds pretty uninteresting to me. ;)

Yeah, I've got an account on there. I don't use it though... I prefer Anime-Planet. :P

Just finished first episode of Nichijou: over-the-top-freaking-[Jane]HI-larious[/Jane]!!! the robot girl is totally Osaka, though, gotta say, recycled material.

Oh don't give me that... Forget synopsizes, forget summaries....

Just watch the first episode before making a judgment on someone's interpretation....

Don't know what this is exactly, ran into this on DeviantART....

BEATLESS is a short novel written by Satoshi Hase and illustrated by redjuice, which is serialized in Newtype magazine. This 'BEATLESS Introduction Set' [link] includes a figure of one of the stories' main characters - 'Leicia', the female hiE. It also comes with a special guidebook to the novel.

The figure of Leicia shows off her delicate, flexible looking body, as well as the huge device she holds behind her. The guidebook features a prologue to the novel, a list of terminology, various illustrations, character designs and more! It really is the perfect introduction to Leicia's story, 'BEATLESS'.

Reminds me of vocaloids..

I didn't say that slice-of-life shows are uninteresting, I just said that they sound uninteresting. I was conveying the exact same idea as you: that boring-sounding synopses aren't indicative of a bad show.

I'm sure Hanasaku Iroha is awesome, and I'm looking forward to watching it. But like I said earlier, I'll wait until it's finished. I'm not interested in watching shows that are still running.

So thanks for the advice, but it wasn't necessary. At all. :sly:

So no Naruto, Bleach, or One Piece for you, ever!

You are correct, sir. Naruto and Bleach are in fact the only two anime i've marked as "Won't watch" on anime-planet, though I suppose I should add One Piece as well.

One Piece is the lesser of the three evils though. It doesn't take itself quite as seriously as the other two. :P

Bleach is very spotty. I liked a lot of the town character development early on, and there were a few spots later in the series where it got really intense, and Nel was awesome. Naruto's greatest strength is close relationships among a big cast, but they've spread it way too thin over the years and it's hard to stay interested any more. One piece I have yet to get seriously into, but I've seen the first 40 or so episodes and yes, it looks like wacky fun.

But whatever you want to say, these are the three biggest animes on the planet right now, with people all over the world watching them.

And in Nichijou/Street Fighter related news:

Nano totally looks like Osaka, but the similarities end there.

Just keep watching. I swear, it just keeps getting better every episode.

man, yes. They suck.

DID SOMEONE SAY SCHOOL DAYS!?!???

Totally not suited for those of the young generation and an epic spoiler for those who haven't watched.

And yes, it is a slice of life anime...or it began as one...

It still sucks. It's normal teenagers. They don't have powers, nor guns, nor guns with superpowers, nor they drive gigantic robots with drills instead of hands, nor they time travel... heck, the dog doesn't even talk.

Please. If I want to see such a thing, I'll watch a live action show.

And yes, I know how School Days ends.

I see your reasoning for finding this type of anime boring i think.

Meh, in unrelated-Asuka news:

I think that picture's been posted before, but it's lovely anyway. 👍

C'mon Cano, there's nothing wrong with an anime being realistic.

I personally don't see how anybody could stand watching primarily just slice-of-life anime though. Corny situational comedy, especially when it's so far-fetched and/or over-the-top as it commonly is in anime, can only keep me entertained for so long. If an anime doesn't have a gripping storyline, I tend to lose interest quickly.

That's not to say I won't watch slice-of-life stuff at all. But I'm not gonna watch a bunch of it in a short period of time when there's so many things out there that are funny and have an interesting storyline.

You guys are so.......it's like.... I don't even get why you guys are so picky for sometimes...

I mean, "if it's got no action, it's boring"? That's a little close-minded, don't you think?

Expand your tastes and give things a chance.. 👍

It's all about storytelling. And the fundamental story is the hero's quest. Now, there's a lot of ways that a hero can be portrayed, and there's a lot of ways to gussy up a story (adding guns, sex, humor, etc.) But at the end of the day, the only good story is one where the protagonist confronts a challenge to the community (friends, family, world, etc.) and overcomes that challenge with the help of friends and his/her own determination to stick to community virtues. Yes, preachy, but true. So, good stories can be slice of life, live action, books, science fiction, etc., and your preference among these formats is up to you, but have the maturity to recognize that good storytelling can take many different forms and that though you may not appreciate all of them, others can do so without deserving criticism.
