In terms of the price/power ratio, desktops win, hands down...
You must remember that laptops must run at lower speeds to avoid overheating (less free air space), and also the fact that most laptop users are willing to sacrifice a few MHz here and there in tradeback for battery life, while obviously that's not a legimate thing to be concerned about for desktop users.
Also, it's a lot harder to add expansions to laptops... they're sort of disposable machines, not like the kind of desktops that can last for a decade with various RAM boosts and the like.
So, laptops should only be used by people who need the portability, or by the ultra-rich. Also, it can be used by people who need to work on files both at work and at home (though necessary precautions need to be taken to prevent neck and back problems, since laptop screens are so low... though I haven't used it,
Lapvantage is one product that claims to do so).
I personally have an iBook, which handles all of my applications just fine (word processing, internet, email, music)... I have one so that I can do homework on the bus, at friends' houses, etc. (I
so want a lucious PowerBook though!
