Depends on what your needs are. But, i prefer laptops :D only for their portablility

Desktops are clearly the better of the two. They are cheaper, more powerful, and have more options when looking for upgrades and add-ons. Laptops are useful tools for people that like portability though.

Laptops win for portabliity
But desktops, MUCH more hard drive space, faster and cheaper like Tom M said.
I prefer Desktops.
If you want to upgrade a Desktop there is the space to do it, but with a laptop there is no space to make the hard drive bigger or do much else, and there is alot more kit for the Desktop.

Remember that with a laptop, you're paying for miniaturisation, for the cutting edge of battery technology etc. Laptops are much more expensive for a given specification, and should only be bought if you absolutely have to have one. I have one at work, but only ever take it out with me if I need my network admin tools. Otherwise, like when I'm going to meetings, I use my Pocket PC.

Desktops are better for their reliability and customization. That's what I pick. Laptops are more portable but not powerful as desktops. However, Alienware has a very fast laptop as fast as a 2.0 Ghz powered desktop and is game-compatible.

i got a laptop and trushme you don't want one ot this.

you have to pay a lot for any up-grade (no matter how litle are)

too slow, (compared with the desktops) the price is too high.

but if you really need a portable pc go ahead and buy it.

i got one and i never will buy another never

Laptops have fuzzy monitors as well.

You think? Are you using the screen in its native resolution? Because each pixel is an individual diode, you need to run the screen at its intended resolution, or you force the laptop to resample the image. Most laptops are designed to run at 1024x768. I'm typing this on my HP Omnibook.

it depends on certain factors.

-if you travel alot (portability)
-what kind of memory, speed, etc. you want or need
-how much you'll use it
-what you want to use it for

In terms of the price/power ratio, desktops win, hands down...

You must remember that laptops must run at lower speeds to avoid overheating (less free air space), and also the fact that most laptop users are willing to sacrifice a few MHz here and there in tradeback for battery life, while obviously that's not a legimate thing to be concerned about for desktop users.

Also, it's a lot harder to add expansions to laptops... they're sort of disposable machines, not like the kind of desktops that can last for a decade with various RAM boosts and the like.

So, laptops should only be used by people who need the portability, or by the ultra-rich. Also, it can be used by people who need to work on files both at work and at home (though necessary precautions need to be taken to prevent neck and back problems, since laptop screens are so low... though I haven't used it, Lapvantage is one product that claims to do so).

I personally have an iBook, which handles all of my applications just fine (word processing, internet, email, music)... I have one so that I can do homework on the bus, at friends' houses, etc. (I so want a lucious PowerBook though! :D)
